Constant Hill - Calicaribe

Post by Badger5 »

Hello,

Well, after looking at and asking about other islands we have decided to stick with St John for another vacation. So - we are looking at Calicaribe on Constant Hill. Does anyone have any experience with this villa or location. If you do know of it, does it have a nice view? I am not sure where it is located. Any information would be great. Any other villa suggestions for a family of 5 would also be appreciated. We would need three bedrooms, AC and a pool. A beautiful view is also a must - preferably a sunset view on the Cruz bay side of the island.

Thanks!

I believe it's called Contant Hill, not Constant. It is basically the outermost point on the right side of Great Cruz Bay (looking from the Westin). We stayed at Argonauta Villa which is in the same area. It had a very nice view of St. Thomas and you could even see St. Croix on clear days. We were able to see the opening of Great Cruz Bay, but could not see all the way back to the Westin.

The area is nice and very quiet. We could not see any of the neighboring villas from where we were staying.

The road up the hill is paved, but very narrow. I don't think there is room for two cars to pass, but that was not a problem as there is very little traffic going up there.

I can send you a couple of photos of the views if you are interested.

The views from Contant Point are terrific! We were at Argonauta last year (and are returning this year). It's a quiet spot, very little traffic or noise. The villa you are thinking about looks very nice.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

The views form Calicaribe are awesome. There is a great view of the villa when you come into Cruz Bay on the ferry as it sits right on the hill facing St. thomas.

This is my best guess for the location of CaliCaribe on Contant Point. The pool and detached guest room line up.....

Go to Google maps and plug in 18 19'27.72"N 64 47'37.71"W

I never stayed at Calicaribe but stayed at a villa called Casa Contant and the road is a big U that starts at the basketball courts (also trash dumpsters) and goes around to the top of Jacob's Ladder. I loved the view and it had a great sunset.
Have a great time!

I have been away in Las Vegas for the last week so I didn't see your question. It sounds glamorous but I was visiting my sister with my 11 yr old son so I didn't even wager a quarter. We did get to see Love at the Mirage though and it was awesome. But I am off topic aren't I?

I did not stay at Calicaribe but I toured it when it was for sale maybe 3 years back(unfortunately it seems my life has run all together and I can no longer remember when I did things--and it is not related to those painkillers either!) I loved it and if I could have afforded it I would have bought it on the spot. If you have specific questions I can probably answer some of them.

Madforstjohn,

Thank you for responding. Just a couple of questions. How deep is the pool? Is the veranda a nice spot to watch a sunset? Is it relatively private?

Thanks!

I will do my best to answer your questions. I didn't stay there so I don't know how deep the pool was but I did know it would be an awesome place to look out at St. Thomas and the sunset. The pool was right up against the edge of the deck as I recall, not a true disappearing edge but very similiar. There was a great table on the deck with shade that looked out at St. Thomas. I think it was very private but there are villas above you so I don't know if they could look down on you or not. I loved the look of Calicaribe and would stay there myself but we need 4 bedrooms.

I've stayed at Calicaribe.

Hi. I've spent a week at this villa. I rented it from VIVA in June of 2004. Forgive my typing below- I am in a hurry to go out, but wanted to get this review up.

Calicaribe is on "Contant Point".

Cali is an elegant villa - with with details that show the builder's quality. The furnishings are top quality. This is a luxury villa - not just a rental home - a true luxury villa. It is also fairly new. Maybe built in 2002 or 3?

It is a perfect villa for someone who wants to be near Cruz Bay, yet removed enough to not hear any of the noise or see the lights. You'll feel like you are off and away from Cruz Bay, but won't be. You can be in Cruz Bay in under 5 minutes.

The road leading to the diveway is well paved - and the driveway to Cali is a VERY short distance from the main road - so you are not on the little road long. Then you'll climb a steep, but paved driveway and (which is well lit with beautiful accent lighting) ascend to a parking area. There is room to turn around - and also to park in a little alcove area so that other cars can more in and out.

The house has been sold since I've stayed there - so some things have changed slightly. But, the pics reflect most of the same.

The front door is some kind of amazing carved wood. The one thing to note about this house is that it was built with the detail and quality of a private home. The furnishings are beyond ordinary rental quality.

You enter into the great room - seen in the photos. That is the furniture that was there when I rented - and it was really comfortable.

The dining table is outside on the deck and seats 6.

Kitchen is on the smaller side, but is open to the geat room - dishwasher, excellent appliances.

back and down a hallway to the left, you'll find a laundry room and just past that, the entry to what is termed as the "office". This can be used as a children's bedroom. I think it had pocket doors. You have to pass through this room on your way to the MBR...but if you leave the doors open, it'll just feel/look like a hallway alcove kind of area and won't feel like you are passing through a room.

You enter the lovely MBR with windows across a wall and a view of STT twinkling at night as you lay in bed and look out. STT lights will be very evident at this proprty - all sparkly across the sea.

There's a door to the gallery (deck crossing the entire front of this long property) from the MBR.

MBR has it's own bath with a semi-garden shower. Shower is actually a room of its own (a fabulous feature of this house) with a partial view of the home's rear garden area. There's a plating/natural area in that room where plants are growing - all very tropical looking.

Pool deck is one of the best features with lots of room for sitting at the poolside patio table w/umbrella, lounging in top quality chase lounge chairs, cooking on the grill. There's an al fresco shower out in this area - for sand rinses, I assume.

Pool is a square shape - not very large, but certainly larger than a cocktail or plunge pool. Large enough that we jumped in! I think it gets to abour 5 or 6 feet deep. It has geenerous stairs on one side - nice for really small kids or non-swimmers.

Across the pool deck is the second pavillion housing two bedrooms - one upper and one lower. Upper bedroom has it's own bath and deck overlooking save view as MBR- St Thomas. You can enter directly form pool deck into upper bedroom, or enter into bath, as I recall. This is a nice feature since this bath can be used by any guests using the pool or deck, if agreeable with the occupant of that poolside bedroom.

Third bedroom is below, in this same pool pavillion. This lower bedroom is accessed by exterior walkway on the far side of the house. You must exit the pool deck into driveway area and then walk around to the walkway to lower area. If you are entering this bedroom from the car - this is very easy and convenient.

This lower suite has a patio area of its own, a sitting area and a kitchen....as well as it's own bath. IMO, this area is very nice -- as nice in appointments are the rest of the house. There's a TV down there. As I recal, this patio is heavily shaded and has little to view. I could be wrong about this or it might have changed with the new owners.

Preperty is home to interesting tropical fruit plants. I recall banana, papaya and passionfruit. There were mature, potted passionfruit plants by the pool, in large tera cotta pots. Fruit was plentiful when we were there, and we used it to make sorbets and drinks.

I'm sure I've forgotten something. Ask any questions.

I'm always checking on Calicaribe - rates have increased since I stayed there. IMO, it is worth it.
