New Orleans: dining in/near the Quarter (mini reviews added)
New Orleans: dining in/near the Quarter (mini reviews added)
We are planning a short visit to New Orleans next month. We won't have a car and are staying near the Quarter. The last time we were there was 7 years ago. Thinking about eating at Irene's one night - hope they are as good as we remember. We'll probably hit the signature places like Acme.
Does anyone have other (or better) suggestions on dining in/near the Quarter? We would appreciate your input.

Look up Mulate's. It's not far from the Casino. Real cajun food. Catfish Ettoufe is "to die for".
They also have some "real" live cajun music entertainment. Lot's of fun!

I agree with Loria that Stella is amazing (if fine dining is your thing and you have the budget that is!) For funky laid back vibe Angeli's on decatur is a great spot; never had a bad meal there. I must say though my current favorite new orleans restaurant is Cochon. Its not in the quarter but its a very quick cab ride to the warehouse district. Its authentic cajun food (not creole which is more of what you will find in N.O.) If you want to have a really perfect day and you are there on a sunday the jazz brunch at Commander's Palace is absolutely top notch and follow it up with a saints game! Cant go wrong!
p.s. If you want you can make the "quick" two hour drive west to Lafayette and come and eat at my restaurant the Blue Dog Cafe Enjoy New Orleans and thank you for helping her get back to her former glory!

I ate here last year, it's right across the street from the convention center. I agree, real cajun/New Orleans.vi lover wrote:Look up Mulate's. It's not far from the Casino. Real cajun food. Catfish Ettoufe is "to die for".

The best mashed potatatoes I had in my life were at K-Pauls...that place was good (it was about 7 years ago though).
I always have to go to the Italian deli/market down near the french market...forget the exact name but it's the "home of the muffaletta"...I always have to have one or two of those while in nawlins...
Actually...I think this is my fave muffaletta place...

Thank you so much everyone. We've been looking up your suggestions and wish we didn't have to be so selective. We'll be there for 3 nights (2 full days). We'll see how much we can devour in that short of a time. I don't care if I gain weight as a result.
Does anyone recommend Irene's? We remember enjoying eating there but it was over 7 years ago. Are they still popular? We had no reservation and had to wait a while back then.
I better make sure that none of the places we go requires "jacket and tie". My husband is not planning on packing anything formal in his carry-on. We can do business casual but not fancier than that.
islandchef,
We usually drive down to New Orleans (no, not all the way from NY) but we are flying this time and will have no car. Sorry we can't visit your restaurant - maybe we'll try in the future.
sherban,
My husband is like you on muffalettas, must stop there every visit to New Orleans and never remembers the name of the place. Thanks for the photo. Now we know.

I've been trying to think of the name of this place all day... http://www.herbsaint.com/ . Very good a year and half ago.
Have a great time in New Orleans!

New Orleans is one of my favorite food destination cities. We have never had a car there. You have gotten some good suggestions and I have a couple more.
Once upon a time herbsaint was associated w/ Susan Spicer, who's own/operates Bayonna, which has never disappointed us...

30 Dauphine St in the quarter
I have had lunch at herbsaint and it was delicious also!
The lunch place someone couldn't come up w/ the name of for coffee and bengiets is Cafe du Monde...across the street from Jackson Sq...its a popular destination. If you like strong coffee w/ chickory and fried dough, it's the place to go!

Have had muffalettas from Central Grocery as they were our intro to the original, later to go on to prefer those at The Napolean House...corner of Chartres and St Louis. Their inside courtyard is a cozy, comfy place for lunch.

Another lunch spot we like is the Praline Connection (542 Frenchmen Street) for soul food. Their fried pickles are delicious, to me as a northerner, unique!

We have been to more than a couple great nites entertainment over at Snug Harbor if you might be interested in some nightlife....

LOVE, LOVE NOLA!!!! hope to get back there anytime!
