Do to hurricane in Aug

Post by MSGARMYGIRL »

We were suspose to arrive on STJ for first trip Aug 17-24. We got a call from the villa owner on Sunday the 16th saying not to come that he was boarding up the villa and all access to the island had been cut off. Needless to say i was pretty bummed. He said he could keep our money and we could come back any time.

Want to know your thoughts MAR OR APR?

I am confused - a hurricane this year??? we did not have a "H" this year and there was not even a "system" out there that looked like it could have been a threat even as a depression or storm as far as I can remember - certainly not enough that he would have had to board up the villa (again as far as I remember)

Please more information, as I said I am confused (personally I would probably want my $$ back)

I have to agree with Pia. There were two storms brewing at that time, Ana & Bill, but if memeory serves neither really threatened the USVI and I don't beleive "acess was cut off." Im frankly a little suspicuos and I would check out the weather archives. If there was no storm and no lack of acess, then check the contrcat and see what it says about hurrican related cancellations. you might be entiled to a refund. Did you have trip insurance?

I do remember a day when they closed the port, but then no big storm materialized.

PS. Did a quick check. Ana had been downgraded to a depression by Sunday 8/16. and Bill's track was far east of the USVI. I also now recall a short port closing, but certainly not enough to warrant a full scale cancellation.

Sounds like the owner may have jumped the gun, which is of cousre his right to protect his property, but I think it merits a refund not a rescheduling.

We have been there several times in both Months. Both are absolutely terrific. I prefer April because it gets here sooner. We avoid Spring Break.

We have never been there in March or April. We have a great success in the last 2 weeks of May. The weather and water are warmed up, the kids are still in school and everthing is open. We also enjoy getting the trip with one less day of leave time due to Memorial Day.

I too agree that a refund is in order. That was an overly cautious response.
