St. John with a baby
Hi there! My husband and I came to St. John in 2004 for our honeymoon and fell in love with it. We returned in 2005 and would have returned in 2006 but we got pregnant and morning sickness was too terrible. We'll be having our little boy any time now and would like to make a trip this year again. Have any of you travelled to St.John with a young baby (5-8 month age range)? Are we crazy to consider this? Any tips?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Do it.
I took my youngest there when she was 5 months old. It was not a big deal. We got a crib for the house from the rental company. We did bring a good bit of baby food and all of her diapers for a week. But, you can buy that stuff at Starfish Market now. She spent the day lounging on a blanket at the beach.
Tip? Sit in the shade, but not under any coconuts! My one phobia was that a coconut was going to fall on my daughter.
Another tip is to make certain that there is a fan or air conditioning where you stay. The nights are much louder there. When we stayed at Maho Bay the only way my little one could sleep was putting the box fan near here. Otherwise she woke up all night due to the frogs, crickets and those big black moaning doves (they groan like they are in pain).
My girls swear that they can still remember those early trips.
Cheers, RickG

We took our daughter for the 1st time at the age of 11 months. The key is that you have to work around the babies schedule. When you get a child off their routine the get very fussy. At that point neither of you will have a very good time. We had a couple of fussy days, but we also had some really great days. You got to stick to those feeding times and sleep times and then you will all have a wonderful time.
Absolutely do it.
We took our son to Florida (the beach) at 3.5 months and St. John at 4.5 months.
The villa rental company provided a very nice pack and play type thing free of charge. I know there are good rental services on island also.
We took a cheapy pop up shelter for the beach and he napped on the beach with no problem

The popup was a hit on the November trip.PA Girl wrote:Absolutely do it.

I concur w/ the others. Our daughter has traveled all over with us - her first trip was to St. Martin and St. Barts when she was only 5 months old. (She's also been to Nags Head, San Francisco, Virginia Beach, Indy, Florida, and London in her short life). Yes, we take trips w/o her too. We (ok I) just LOVE to go.
The flights are always the hard part for me. She was good but I was absolutely paralyzed with fear that she would cry. Here's the thing ... babies cry. All you can do is be prepared. Have the bottle or distraction at the ready.
My mantra is PLAN PLAN PLAN and PACK PACK PACK. Esp. if I am going somewhere that I am not familiar with. With STJ I will pack less this next trip when we'll go w/ a 5 year old and a 10 month old, but only because I know I can get what I need there.
My daughter absolutely loves St. John and truly any beach she's been to works for her. I am sure your little one will too.
