The Unplanned Newport Trip report

Post by Xislandgirl »

A friend and I had plans to go to Block Island and stay at the National for an overnight last night. When we arrived at the ferry dock we were told that the ferry was not running due to high seas so we quickly changed plans and headed to Newport.

Harborside Inn- Have stayed here before. Loved Room 17. It is up 2 flights of stairs but it was a 2 story room with 2 queen beds and a very nice view. Love the breakfast room for a nice bite to eat before heading out for the day. Room as very clean.

Brick Alley- After driving to Galilee, then to Newport and checking in, we were more than hungry so went with what we know. We both had the scrod sandwich special and were both very happy with it.

Fluke- We did not have a reservation and when we arrived a fundraiser was being held in the main dining room but they had a table in the bar. The bar is on the 3rd floor and very small but it was fine for us. We started with Potato and Choricou croquettes and 3 cheeses; parm, maytag blue, and cotswald. We then followed with crab cake sandwich and seared scallop (small plate) The wine list was impressive and the service attentative but not annoying. I would highly recommend Fluke.

Black Pearl- Outside patio for lunch. We took advantage of the beautiful fall day and enjoyed a burger and a Tarragon chicken salad sandwich. I do not like ketchup so I am always looking for something to dip my fries in. I asked for honey mustard and what came out was so surprising, it was homemade with tarragon and garlic, I think, in it. I really wanted to drink it. It was that good.

We did manage to get some shopping in, although quite a few stores were closed. We walked the cliff walk and drove Ocean drive.

Great "change of plans" trip, Newport in the off season is wonderful!

Block Island is one of our old stomping grounds. The volume of mudslides I have drank at the National likely goes into the hundreds of gallons!

The ferry not running is definately a fall/winter risk.

Newport is on our someday list.
