Baseball Playoffs
Baseball Playoffs
Well, they’ve certainly been entertaining so far (especially when you count game #163 between the Tigers and Twins) - close games, crazy comebacks, crucial errors, a blown call, plenty of 2 out rallies, etc.
Some random observations:
- - Joe Torre has his faults, but he can still get a team to focus and relax at the same time, whereas La Russa’s team looked tighter than a drum
- - what’s up with walking the bases loaded to pitch to Guerrero, even with Hunter’s recent record against Papelbon? Shouldn’t you first try to pitch him off the plate, get him to go after some bad pitches? Vlad can still be Vlad.
And, The Nation was warned about Billy Wagner in a big spot…
- - speaking of blown saves, while you have to like the Phillies, their closer Lidge had 11 of them in the regular season.
- - while always fun to see the Red Sox choke, the Yankees tend to struggle against the Angels – that team can small ball you to death.
- - A-Rod finally looks relaxed – why somebody with that kind of talent would ever have performance anxiety is beyond me
- - never surprising that it’s Jeter in the middle of those two huge heads up plays, reacting quickly to those base overrunning blunders by the Twins. Why was the Twins 3rd base coach so far down the line on a ball that didn’t get through the infield? That stop sign had to be up by the base.
- - did you like the 6pm starts? I wound up really liking them. Better than falling asleep in the late innings.

that play off game was crazy and you kind of figured whomever the winner was they were going to be off their game a bit for game 1 at least. Twins looked to be off it for a little longer. Yankees had a pretty good series but the Twins didn't help their cause too much. Angels will likely be a different story. all this time off worries me a tad though.
couldn't even believe my eyes when I saw the final in Boston yesterday. we had been watching but switched off to something else before the game was over.
the 6 o'clock starts are ok on the weekend but during the week they are on my nerves a little. 7 is ok but 6? I'm not ready to sit down and watch baseball at 6. and I don't like to miss anything
Chip Carey is awful in my opinion. Had to sync the TV with John Sterling. Also tough to take but he's more like a drunk uncle at Thanksgiving .. I just shake my head but that's about all I can do.
I see some guys that better change their tunes for the next round. Damon, Swisher, Cano - where were they offensively? And Hughes wasn't sharp.
Girardi scares me .. that's all I'm gonna say.
Bring on the Halos!

We didn't realize it was an early game yesterday, but flipped on the radio on the way back from Maine and the Sox were ahead 5-1 - Woo Hoo! Well, the WooHoo quickly turned into a WAAAAAAH!!

6pm, 7pm, 10pm - won't matter - I won't be watching

Agree about Chip C. Ronnie D. is a good analyst, but somehow much better on the Mets broadcasts.
How did you like the pitch by pitch strike zone locator graphic in the lower right corner that TBS/TNT used on the HD broadcast? I liked it. You could really tell how inconsistent some umps are.
Finally, somebody taking full advantage of the 16x9 wide screen...

No, no, no, no, and no. Billy Wagner was MORE than fine in the big spot. Does he play first base? Because I could've sworn it was Youk who played that ground ball into a single. Wagner was dominant for nearly his entire stint with the Red Sox, and I suspect he made himself a good amount of coin in the offseason. I'd love to have him back.jmq wrote: And, The Nation was warned about Billy Wagner in a big spot…
I am in the trade Papelbon camp, and elevate Bard to closer. Paps has become a crybaby who wants to be the highest paid closer in the history of the game...A point he has made publicly. Not to mention, the Red Sox elitist owners don't like him personally - with Theo saying earlier this summer that "Paps is not all that sharp to begin with", or something to that effect. You know, because he's from Mississippi, and Theo is from Brookline...Paps must be nothing more than a stupid hick. At least that's what I got from Theo's comments.
Paps is as good as gone - if not this winter, then next.
Go Angels.

Boston Mike, I agree with you.
I was at the game yesterday. The mood was bad from the moment we came into the park. Even when we were ahead, it just felt wrong. I think they brought Papelbon in too early...Wagner was doing OK. When Papelbon came out to warm up, his pitches were crazy, all over the place. You could tell his head was not right. I have some pictures of him during his warm up and he looks panicked. All the players looked really tired.
I had awesome field box seats for tonight's non-existant game...how often can you get those? Oh well, at least I can get a good night's sleep. I have a chest cold anyway so...and I can put the refunded $$ from tonight's game and my ALCS tickets towards a St. John trip. Just trying to stay positive.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
Yet another late game rally in the 9th as the Phils move on. The LCS and WS have a tough act to follow.
Also, this pre-determined scheduling by TV really sucks with multiple days between series and extra days off between games - Game 7 of the WS could be on Nov. 5th!
(although, on the bright side for the NYY, C.C. can easily get 3 starts against the Halos, only one on short rest)

Amusing story that could only happen to me.
Sunday afternoon: I'm flipping between 2 football games and the Red Sox/Angels game. The baby is sitting on my lap and I'm explaining football to her.
I switch to the baseball game in the 9th as things are getting fun (Remember...unapologetic Yankee fan here).
Abreu doubles:
"HA! You jerk!" (At Papelbon)
They walk whatshisface to get to Vlad...
Vlad singles
"You dumb S&#t! HAHAHAH"
(From the other room comes the voice of the 7 year old)
"Don't talk to my sister like that!"
"I wasn't talking to her! I was yelling at the Stupid Red Sox. They're gonna lose!"
"OK. We hate the Red Sox. But you still shouldn't say S-H-I-T in front of her"
Point taken.
