Villa provisioning

Post by steveo2916 »

Hi, have used KatiLady once, but want to hear from you all what your favorite provisioning experiences have been. Did a search and found a reference to "tenderloin trays from Christie's", but don't seem to find much else in the way of recommendations. Looking forward to your suggestions!

My best experiences have been on Tortola. St. John is pricey and the options are few. Check out http://www.bobbysmarketplace.com/. I want that on STJ!

That place does look great, Rick. I am interested in villa provisioning too. Did you have a good experience with Katilady, Steve?

I am not sure that KatiLady is a favorite on this board.

Here are my thoughts on provisioning. Have you looked at the prices? Everything is marked up and the delivery charges are ridiculous, in my opinion.
Arrive on island, pick up your car, check out the villa, head out to the store (or stores) and get exactly what you want, back to the villa, pour a cocktail and enjoy. (with a bunch more money in your pocket)

I agree with you Xislandgirl. You've just described our routine - grocery/booze shopping is part of the fun!

we used Susie last October and we were very happy with her service. We ordered the tenderloin platter and fruit and cheese platters for our first night's meal and it was great and we had plenty left for another meal. Susie also brought us a small out of items for the fridge - milk, half and half, muffins, etc, enough for next day's breakfast.
any questions feel free to ask.

Our flight arrives at 9:00p.m. If we check bags we will be on the last ferry to STJ. I'm guessing all grocery stores are closed. What do you suggest.

I did speak to the nice fellow at Mixology, and they will provision booze for a nominal delivery charge. If the order is 100. they don't charge to deliver, but I won't need that much alchol for a few days. But I would like to have a little food the night we arrive.

A 9:00 pm arrival does change things. I would check out Christy's then. I have heard good things about them.

That late arrival does change things. I would be temped to simply call in an order for a carry out pizza from Cafe Roma and grab that before heading up to your villa. If money is no issue, sure, go with provisioning!

On the same theme, shopping right after getting the Jeep, with all of the luggage in it, is a bit of a challenge. You do not want to keep the Jeep in the lot for any amount of time, unattended, with all of your luggage in it. We try to make a "little list" so that one person can go in and do the shopping while the other stays with the Jeep and the luggage in the parking lot. We only pick up what we are certain we need for that night and the next morning.

I have seen Christy's website before, but I can't find it now. Does anyone have the address? Thanks!

We used Katilady just last week for both provisioning and an in-villa dinner. With the provisioning, we ordered additional beer/wine/rum...that was the very convenient part of it. The food was something we certainly could have made a separate run for once we got settled.

We caught the 2 pm Red Hook ferry and were in the villa by 3-ish, so we certainly would have had time to run for groceries. But since we had milk, juice, eggs, bacon, lettuce, bread, etc. we didn't have to.

The in-villa dinner was FABULOUS. We ordered it for our first night there. Keep in mind we had 5 kids with us and had been up since 2:30 a.m. that morning. They were tired and would NEVER have made a dinner out that evening. We just opened the wine and beer and let Katilady set the table, cook, serve, and clean up. It was heaven. The food was great, the convenience even better. I would do that part all over again...the provisioning I would probably skip, if time allowed for a run for groceries.

One other thing too, depending on the agency you use, there might be stuff waiting for you in the fridge. The one time we used Catered To, the fridge was filled up by Katilady by the management company. It was a lot of food! We even took a picture of the refrigerator (she filled the fridge with flowers and we thought it looked really cool).

Vacation Vistas also puts a welcome basket in the fridge. Contents have varied, but have always included a bottle of wine, some beer and soda, cheese, fruit, crackers, chocolates, and probably other stuff I am forgetting. Anyway, it is more than enough for first night noshing, and then in the morning you can go to the grocery and get exactly what you want.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

We used Katilady in the past and are using her again this upcoming trip and we are adding the meal.

If left of his on devices, my hubby will spend 5x more at the grocery store than a small provisioning order. He spent $400 in one store visit in 2004 and no, it didn't last the week. We ended up with a load of overpriced snack foods that only seemed good at the time because he was hungry. We ended up throwing out/leaving behind most of the food.
