Looking for closet dinoholics

Post by MarciaMarciaMarcia »

I admit it. One of my favorite things about vacation is dining out. I love it and I take it waaay too seriously. So now that we are just a few days away from our annual visit to STJ it's time to make a few reservations.

I have a couple of questions. What is the name of the place that used to be Rumbalya? Is it any good?

Is there a restaurant where Wahoos used to be...upstairs on the harbor. If so, any good?

I haven't seen a review of Paradiso in ages and for some reason we've never tried it. Is it any good? It's pretty.

I have several consistent favorites, not that anybody asked:

Breakfast- Chilly Billy's Bloody Mary and Breakfast Burrito

Lunch after beach: Island Blues and Shipwreck Landing

Take out for 24 night: Joe's BBQ

Breezy chic: Rhumblines, Lime Inn, La Tapa

Chic in a breezy fancypants kind of way- Tage Our top overall favorite pick 2 years running for excellence soup to nuts; the greeting, service/attitude, atmosphere, quality, presentation, flavor. Excellent

This year I would like to branch out and try some places that for one reason or another, we have not. These are the places we haven't been. Can you help us choose by voting for yout top pick? Thanks!!

Of the restaurants you listed, I would choose Asolare for the food, view, and service.

Our favorites are La Tapa and Tage (though I have not been there since the new chef).

You asked about Paradiso, we found it to be just OK. The room is nice, but the food was only so so--I think Zozos is better for Italian.

The restaurant where Wahoo used to be is called the Balcony. Very nice view of Cruz Bay, pretty casual. We like to go there for lunch.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I haven't been to all of these but of those listed we really enjoyed Asolare. That and La Tapa were our favorites. They have nice jazz on Monday nights.

Oh, thanks liamsaunt! For some reason I thought that the Balcony was the one next to the Banana Deck which as I type, I realize is Stone Terrace. Not sure if I can edit a poll. I'll try.

I do love ZoZo's view but in my experience, it hasn't been my favorite. I think we've been there 4 or 5 times and the food has always been good to very good, but I've yet to have a server there that didn't act like he was doing us a favor by waiting on us. That ruins it for me. The bar was slightly better but not much. Great place for a sunset drink, then we move on.

I realize that I am hyper critical. Was in the business for 20 years and tudy service is a pet peeve of mine.

I should say Paradiso since I used to work there, but then again maybe Asolare or Bordeaux.

It has been about 5 years, so I know things have changed but here is my top 5 in no particular order and for many different reasons.

Asolare
Zozo's
La Tapa
Stone Terrace
Chateau Bordeaux

when we are back in Nov. our goal is to not repeat any places we went for dinner (LaTapa the exception). Many places were closed when we were there so still lots of places to explore for us!

We have new favorite and it is worth the drive. Sweet Plantains. The menu is West Indian and flavors are excellent. We were there last Spring. They also have a good selection of sipping rums.

None of the above (on the poll). Stone Terrace is by far our favorite.

We only ate out once on our trip last year :? !!! We went to the Stone Terrace and truly enjoyed ourselves. The food was excellent and so was the service. This year we WILL go out more!! :D
