Canon D10 question

Thanks Pia, for being so gracious. I'd posted this in the wrong place!
We're buying a Canon D10 for our trip and wonder what accessories we should also buy. Does it use a special type of battery, and will we need spares? Memory card? Anything else?

We have one-love it but you do need some stuff. I wish someone had told me-especially the first thing here:

I would buy some of the thin clear removable film you can put over screens-the screen gets scratched. Ours is really scratched after one trip.

I would get a lens cloth or two. You will have to use it much more than a regular camera as the lens does not retract. Also you should soak it every night if you use underwater, so you will need to clean the lens then. I would avoid using the cloth on the beach unless you have to as you might scratch the lens with sand.

I would make sure you have a dedicated case for it. You are not going to want to ever throw it in a beach bag or purse- you are always going to want to protect the lens.

If you plan on using it all day and using the video function a lot (really fun underwater!), you might want to consider an extra battery. We didn't have one and ran out one day. We did several videos that day and watched them on the beach. But most days we were totally fine recharging it at night.

I also would consider an extra memory card. Basically to use a new one halfway through the trip and store the other one in a very safe place.

If you lose the camera, you won't lose all the photos.
When you take hundereds of photos, that becomes pretty precious.

I realized I didn't answer your battery question. Ours came with one, it is rechargeable and I believe the charger came with it. You can't use regular batteries, which I consider a plus.

You might want to double check on that-to be sure yours comes with all that. Mine was a gift and I am not 100 percent sure that it all came together, but I think so.

An extra battery would just be a luxury.

I just got the D-10 for my recent Costa Rica adventure. I got an extra battery and an 8GB card on Amazon.com for cheap. I recommend both. And definitely, a dedicated case. This is the first camera I have owned that doesn't fit in my pocket. A huge downfall to the camera if you ask me...

I don't have a D10, but I totally recommend an extra battery! I always have a 2nd battery charged and ready to go, and I can't tell you how that's saved my butt numerous times!

Also, I take my laptop with me on most trips and download my photos every night, just in case, like djmom says, you wouldn't want to lose a single shot! Good luck & have fun!

I don't know anything about cameras or lenses. Can I add a polarized lens to the D10? Will any old polarized lens do?

HI,

I just got a D10(it was a gift) for underwater use primarily. In the box was the battery, charger, and assorted cables/software for your PC/mac.

I also got an extra battery and a couple of 8 gig cards. You can take a lot of pictures with 8 gigs (I don't think you can shoot in RAW mode, at least I haven't found that setting yet.)

You can't attach anything to the lens. I would also second the protective strips and a carrying case.

Also, the camera doesn't have a view-finder (all pics are taken with the "screen") if that makes a difference to you. It would to me if I were planning to use it as my primary camera.

Yee hah! It's arrived! We got a floating strap, covers for the screen, and all the rest. The battery is charging so I can play with it tonight.

Where did you get the floating strap? Since I plan to use it for snorkeling, that would be great. The only ones I found were for the Olympus.

Absolutely beautiful pics! Where were they taken? Such gorgeous scenery. I've got one battery charged and I played with it a little, tonight. I'm pretty technologically challenged, but I should have a rudimentary knowledge of the camera in 3 weeks. I'm excited to be able to contribute something to this forum. They won't be done with the skill of so many here, but they might satisfy someone's need for a fix somewhere......

The pictures were taken in Sandwich, MA (Cape Cod).

I'm sure your pictures will be great. It does well outside in good light; not so great inside with low light (even with the flash).

So, what did you get for a floating strap? Inquiring minds need to know

We got a Zeikos "Floating Foam Strap." I actually acidentally ordered two, so after I test to make sure it will hold the weight of the D10, I'd be willing to leave the extra one somewhere for you. You're arriving just after us, I think.
The strap was in the "customers who bought this also bought that" list, on Amazon, and I didn't see anything negative about it. I will test it (in the aquarium LOL after I get over my feelings of nervousness) before I offer it to you.
