Suggestions needed for one night stay in San Juan

Post by nothintolose »

On our return from STJ, we are making a one night stay in San Juan with the expectations of getting a taste of the city.

Does anyone have any suggestions of somewhere to stay that is not extremely expensive?

Thanks in advance,
nothintolose

p.s. also any suggestions on things to see would be great as well. We will get there around 6pm and leave around 5pm the next evening.

Last trip John and I almost stayed at this place:

but ended up opting for a couple of nights at Secret Harbour instead. We liked that all of the rooms had water views. It is on the beach and not too far from the airport. Overall though, if I was staying for longer than a night or two I think I would rather stay in the Old San Juan area.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Whenever I stay in San Juan, I use either Priceline or Hotwire to book my room. I've stayed in the Sheraton Old San Juan (good location) and at the Radisson Ambassador in Condado, both for under $150 each time.

As far as I can figure, there are three main areas in San Juan where a tourist would stay: 1. Isla Verde, which is right beside the airport. Decent beach, hotels like Holiday Inn, Courtyard, all the way up to higher end resorts; 2. Condado, a residential area with decent shopping and a beach midway between the airport and Old San Juan; and 3. Old San Juan, the historic district, can be very touristy but is beautiful, no beach to speak of but near the water and El Morro and San Cristobal (the forts, very cool).

Personally, I like Old San Juan, but Condado wasn't bad either. If you are finding hotels in SJ a bit expensive, Check Hotwire and then use betterbidding.com to get an idea for what hotels you are looking at (this site estimates the hotel you'll get based on the amenities listed, price, star level, etc).

We stayed here 2 years ago on our way from St. John. Right in the heart of Old San Juan, Walking distance to El Morro and all the shops and historic Buildings resturants. It is in a 200 year old building, so don't expect new. For the price it was great because you don't need a car. just get a taxi. Also some great casinos walking distance from hotel.

95 nightly Howard Johnson Inn Plaza de Armas Old ...
The Howard Johnson in San Juan is located off of Route 36 West, Exit 37, is approximately one mile from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, and five miles from Isla Grande Airport.

We stayed at the San Juan Best Western Airport Hotel. This is right at the airport and requires no driving or shuttles. This may not fit your needs in wanting to explore San Juan.

This hotel is great if someone wants to fly in to San Juan the night before and then take morning flight to STT.

Try the Embassy Suites at Isle Verde. Short taxi trip to airport. Very good facilities with breakfast and Mgr's cocktail party included in room rate. Short walk to beach. $20 taxi inc. tip to Old San Juan. Stayed 1 to 2 nites each of the last 3 years and enjoyed it very much!!
