I think a while back someone mentioned that American Airlines said you had to check in at St. Thomas four hours before flight time. Is that correct? We haven't been to St. John for a few years but my recollection is that there's not much in the St. Thommas airport unless it has changed.

Yes a few months ago they announced a 4 hour check in time - not so thank goodness 
If you are checking luggage, the "rule" is you MUST have the process complete (meaning bags tagged and boarding pass in hand) 60 mins before flight time or they will not accept you for flight. Having said that I would NOT recommend only 60 mins to clear US Customs and Immigration. If you are travelling peak departure times, peak travel days and peak season I would allow a minimum of 2 hours at the airport. If I am checking luggage on non peak days, non peak departure times and non peak season I allow approx 90 mins.
