Longtime lurker leaving for STJ in 6 days!
First, thanks to EVERYONE here for all the time you spend informing those of us who are off on our first St. John adventures!
We are traveling to celebrate our 5th anniversary and are staying at Beas Maison (Coral Bay side) starting a week from today...I think I have a good handle on most things, but one question: is it very rainy??? The weather outlook says showers every day...this is not horrible to me (no sun equals less sunburn while snorkeling!), but I want to be prepared...do we need rain gear??
Thanks!!

What you will find is that there is normally a 20 or 30% chance of rain every day. When it gets to 70% or more, I start to think we might have a rain out kind of day. There is normally a shower around 2 pm, and it may or may not cover the entire island. It will probably last 15 to 45 minutes. When they say that there is, let's say, a 40% chance of rain they should be required to tell us that there is about a 50% change that they are right.
Have a great time. Bring a book or DVD for that rain-out or villa gravity day. And, most important, have a great time.
You now owe us a trip report.

The odd thing is that it can rain for a brief time on one part of the island and be perfectly clear elsewhere. There have been many times that I have stood in the sun on the deck of our villa on the South shore and watched it rain on the North shore.
Afternoon showers = cool rainbows

Congratulations on your swiftly approaching first trip! We made our first trip during the week of rain in May, and it didn't spoil our good time. It would have been nicer in the sunshine, but we still had a spectacular time and can't wait to return.
FWIW: I just survived another vacation, camping, in rain for 7 days with a $3.88 rain poncho from the camping section at Walmart.

You should have no worries about rain, especially on the Coral Bay side where it seems to be on the dry arid side. You might catch a shower on the North Shore beaches but hey, you'll have your swimming suit on so you'll be wet anyway!
Have a blast! I know you will! The first "virgin trip" is always the best
Cheers 2 U

Trust me no rain gear needed
It has been hot, hot, hot (did I say hot) with no rain except for a few quick - less than 5 min showers per day.
If, for some unknown reason, we get our heavy seasonal rain (that happens in Oct/Nov) you can buy for approx $2, a poncho, and they sell them at Freebird in Cruz Bay and Chelsea Drug store I know for sure
Come on down the weather and water are beautiful

ps: I'm sure you are looking at the live webcam hourly - if not here is the link...............
