F The Economy Trip Report Day 6 - Ohio Tom Thank you!

Post by Boston Mike »

I almost forgot where I left off. Yes, day 5 it was detox and beach day with those crazy forum people.

BEFORE I GO ANY FURTHER I NEED TO PROVIDE A LITTLE INFORMATION FROM OUR 2008 TRIP.

During our 2008 trip we went over to Skinny Legs for a lunch and to catch the Red Sox game. Of course they bumped it to a night game so we didn’t get to see it. Instead they had the LPGA tour on and watching that is like watching an ice cold beer slowly drip to the floor of hell and not taking one sip from the ice cold container that hold said beer.

SERIOUS NOW!

There was a very interesting gentleman that my wife Nicolle took a liking to. They were chatting and laughing away like there was no tomorrow and it seemed like they knew each other for the longest time. You always seem to meet people on St. John that create memories that you hold with you for a long time. This guy did just that for me and my wife. I could actually look over at him and I thought I was looking at my father’s brother. The personality, the rosy cheeks and squinty eyes with what I call the biggest small smile in the world. Everything about him I saw a little piece of my father. Seeing Nicolle just sitting there hamming it up with him sent a little tear down my cheek as it reminded me of times she would sit and chat with my dad when he was alive. I never really told her that though. Some of the stories he told us just had us laughing and begging for more beers. We got to hear how proud he was of his daughter. We got to hear how he ended up in St. John. Or the time he had to chase a donkey off his roof, or when he thought his wife went missing. It went on and on and every story he told us was worth listening to.

One of the best stories he told was about the bean bag game. Nicolle was explaining to him how we play this game at tailgate parties for the races (he had a Jeff Gordon shirt on), and the Kenny Chesney concerts. Out of nowhere he yells “CORN HOLE, I know that game, it is called corn hole.” “I was the corn hole champion of Ohio.” With the way it sounded I had to let loose. Beer spray isn’t a nice thing when you’re out and about. So now every time me and Nicolle see someone playing that game, in tandem we both look at each other and yell “I was the corn hole champion of Ohio.”

He introduced us to some more of the locals sitting at the bar. That guy they call Pirate Bill….WOW. He introduced us to his wife who was working at one of the stores on the other side of Skinny Legs. I still remember that day like it was yesterday. The guy who called himself Ohio Tom left a lasting impression on us that we would never forget.

BACK TO 2009

After a day of detox we decided to pick it up and head on over to Coral Bay for some lunch at Shipwreck Landing. Using my awesome GPS system (a stubborn man that won’t ask for directions) we drove by it without even seeing it. Finally turned around and found it. Imagine that. Picked out a couple of seats at the bar and the drinking began at 10:30 AM. It was all about the chill mode. We were just sitting there at the bar and in walks Ohio Tom’s wife. Nicolle turned around to me and says hey there is Ohio Tom’s wife. She heard that and as I glanced up at her I can see the tears coming out of her eyes. Nicolle turned to her and she peacefully informed Nicolle that Ohio Tom had passed away. Nicolle gave her a big long hug and I could tell she felt really bad. We sat and chatted with her for a while and learned more about Tom. Even though we only knew him for the few hours at Skinny Legs, the news of his passing touched us. I know somewhere up there in heaven, there is a guy named Tom and don’t you worry, he will be the corn hole champion of heaven.

We had our lunch and chatted some with Pat from Shipwreck. Decided to head back and hit the Beach Bar for happy hour. It was a mellow day for us.

Not much of a report, but just had to put it out there to express an event that touched us while we were on St. John.

Thank you for memories and laughs Ohio Tom. We will always remember you. RIP

And that is exactly why I love St. John. You meet the neatest people just sitting on a barstool and striking up a conversation..Thanks for sharing that with us Mike.
