Travel from U.S. mainland to USVI w/ birth cert. & photo

Has anyone experienced problems at the STT airport when departing from USVI to go back to the mainland when using a birth certificate and driver's license instead of a passport? According to the U.S. government this is permitted, but are the customs folks at STT good about this rule? I've heard some people have been given a hard time I guess because the workers there are so used to only seeing passports. I have friends that are planning a last minute trip to St. John and will not be going to BVI at all, so they were trying to avoid paying for passports (they don't have) and the expense of expedited handling.

Anyone with experience or does everyone on this forum have passports? I've only traveled with a passport.

Last August, we had just birth certificate for our youngest (Passports for the rest of us) and noone hesitated. Maybe it was because he was so small. Don't know ... but it wasn't an issue.

We do not have passports and have never had a problem.
Just make sure your birth certificate has a raised
seal on it.

They will be fine - no problems at all as long as they are not planning to go to the BVI's (which you said they weren't)

And, according to the new regulations a "raised seal" is no longer a requirement.
