off topic camera help on island now
Help please,
We are on St John and one of my favorite things to do is take underwater photos. I have a canon a80 with underwater case. First day out pictures fine, now when I try to take them underwater they come out a big blurred mess does not look like anything , camera works out of water even in case. Really strange. I am in the kitchen sink of the villa trying to get an underwater picture of a spoon !! case is not leaking that I can tell Help

Is it possible that your camera housing was not completely dry? Or, did you take the camera from an air conditioned vehicle and snap it into the housing while it was still cool? Either scenario could have resulted in condensation developing either on the lens of the camera (if coming from AC car) or on the inside of the housing (if not totally dry) and created a blur on your pictures.
Make sure the camera is room temperature and the housing is completely dry and try again.
I hope this helps!

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
Sounds similar to the issue I had with the A80 I posted about a couple of weeks ago.

The internal wiring may be acting up in the high humidity environment of the underwater case due to a known parts defect affecting this model.
Maybe leave it out in an air conditioned room overnight if possible to dry it out, but bring it to ambient temp before use like liamsaunt says and you might squeeze some more shots out of it before it completely fails, which sucks cuz you’re on island NOW.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that Canon will repair it free of charge when you get back even though it is years out of warranty.
I am reminded once again how a few of us speculated at one time about how a possible business model of renting underwater digital cameras on STJ might work. When done using, either take a disc of the photos or the memory card with you. Might be some demand, as UW cases are $$ and bulky to transport and the reliability of the Olympus waterproofs seems less than stellar. The waterproof Canon PowerShot D10 becomes available later this month and it will be interesting to see the user feedback on it.
