Advice needed for STT car rental agy & 1-night stay

Post by St. John Lover »

Hi all,

We usually just go straight to St. John from the airport, and vastly prefer renting our vehicles on St. John, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we find we have to spend our 1st night in St. Thomas. We will also need a rental car while we are there.

I know there used to be 2 or 3 STT car rental agencies that let you take your car to STJ (several don't), but I forgot which ones those were exactly. My foggy memory is thinking Dependable, Discount, & Budget (or some trio like that?). Please confirm or update my info and advise which you think is best to use & why.

Also, we'd like to stay close to Red Hook area for our 1-night. I know Wyndham, Ritz, and Secret Harbor are around there, maybe a couple others. Any suggestions/feedback?

Thank you!

We'll be renting from Discount this June for our trip to STJ. They were the most competitive and said (over the phone) that they will send a replacement over on the barge if necessary. Plus, I really want to take the tops off. Of the Jeeps.

I requested a quote from discount, but their response made me wonder how much they had on the ball -

SUV Jeep Liberty,4door,automatic,removable top,4x4,a/c, ...

I'm renting from Thrifty. I checked also with Avis. They will allow car to be taken to STJ but they are more expensive than Thrifty

Fowst-- just my .02 here but generally speaking a vehicle without a top is not advisable due to sporadic, sudden and heavy downpours. It is totally unpredicatable and you will generally find that it takes forever for your vehicle to dry out and will
result in a moldy smell.

We generally take the windows off the jeep but the honestly we wouldn't consider taking the top off even if we could due to the aforementioned downpours.

Just something to think about...

Can't help much with the jeep issue....but....we stayed one night on STT last year before heading over to STJ the next day at Secret Harbour. We loved it..had a great place to swim/snorkel, had afternoon appetizers at their beach bar/grill, wonderful dinner that night & breakfast the next day at the Blue Moon Restaurant right there on their beach property. The hammocks on the beach are wonderful...also a beautiful view out to sea. Cute little gift shop there also. The room was very nice, complete with kitchen but we didn't use it. The staff were great; so nice, helpful & friendly.

Hertz will not let you take their cars to STJ but Avis will. We did a one night stayover in STT at the Green Iguana two years ago. Clean and simple for a very good price. Within walking distance of CA if you don't mind the 1000 stairs. We took a taxi for dinner and walked to Bumpa's for breakfast the next morning before boarding the CA ferry for STJ.

Everyone but Hertz lets you take the vehicle over. But, with the Hertz concession on STJ closed that could change.

Discount is open late - 10PM. We started using Dependable and haven't changed. But, if we were coming in late I'd consider Discount.

It's not Red Hook, but my daughters want to do another night at Crystal Palace next trip. They had a very nice time there and its a great place to get into the island spirit.

Cheers, RickG
