Best hike with kids?
Best hike with kids?
Hi-
I have 2 kids ages 3 and 6 who enjoy small hikes (less than 2 hours, not much elevation change). I'm looking for what you may think is doable for kids that age. Looking through Off the Beaten Track I'm thinking Cinnamon Bay Loop, maybe Lind Point trail. I'm worried about how the 3 year old will do on the hills
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

if you catch the national park tour for reef bay that is doable--it's all down hill and you get a boat ride back to Cruz bay--certainly the trail out to drunk bay, yawzi point trail (both very easy and very short) are doable--we did brown bay with a 3 year old but we carried part of the way back
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>
The Mary Point Pond trail (if it's not too buggy):usually ducks on the pond, you can circle back to your car on the fRancis Bay road. Leinster Bay: totally flat and good things to look at on the shore. Ditliff Point late in the day...you can now drive in part way, park and walk to the end. The road is paved now, but has very little traffic--great for toddlers (trying to be positive about that road...).
Leinster trail was very easy with two kids - one walked, one was stolled. My hubby had to lift his stroller over a few spots, but it wasn't a big deal.
If not for the great mosquito infestation of '08 it would have been a lovely walk.

It depends on how tough your 3 year old is. We have 2 girls, our youngest has been hiking with us since she was about 4. She would grumble a lot to herself but go along.
Here are the ones we have been on that are kid-friendly.
Lind point- the hills aren't too bad, it is more twisting and turning, mostly wooded, but it can seem like a long way. Lovely reward at the end (beach) but then you have to hike back or to Caneel. We go to Caneel instead of turning back, we will often eat lunch there (we look nasty!) and then my husband gets a cab and gets the jeep and comes back to get us. Bring lots of water. We always see lots of hermit crabs on this one.
Drunk Bay- Another great hike, but this is a hot one. There is going to be no shade. You also have a long slow walk up a hill after the drunk bay hike to get back to the car. The rocky beach though is awesome and the kids will love it. We did have one year where my daughter REFUSED to go on the drunk bay hike because there were so many cactuses. The trail can get a little overgrown and I guess she thought they were going to jump out at her, but there was no reasoning with her.
One of the Cinnamon bay hikes( think someone referred to a loop) it is about a mile long- it is a nice little nature walk type of hike. Sort of like a rainforest I guess.
For all hikes, preparation is the key, I would recomend the kids have something like Keens where they can't stub their toes, but can get them wet. Hats, and water, especially for the Salt Pond/Drunk Bay Hike. Probably more water than you think you need.
