Italy trip day 3

Post by waterguy »

Italy Day 3 Villa Borghese museum, Coliseum and Roman forum

We were up earlier this morning down for the great breakfast. We wanted to be to the Borghesemuseum before 9:00 we didn't have tickets. They were sold out the day before when we checked online. But the hotel staff told us to get there early and there was a chance that someone wouldn't show up
On the way we found out how the delivered the house wines to the restaurants they just run hoses and pump it out of these barrels on the back of this truck.

We walked from our hotel uphill the all the way it is a park now but once it was the grounds for the estate. There are a lot of statues and fountains on the walk.

The museum was the best we saw IMHO and we had a great tour guide that was very knowledgeable and made the tour fun.
You only get 2 hours inside so we went with the tour guide to get as much out of it as possible. No pictures from the inside of this museum because cameras weren't allowed.

[Tip!!!! We got the Roma pass here it was a great purchase. It included two free entrances at to Sites we used that portion here and at the Coliseum and discounts at others. It also let you line jump the the Coliseum had a 2.5 Hour line and we were able to go to the head of it talk about people giving you a dirty look I have to give Kathleen her props for this one What a time saver. It also included unlimited public transportation for 3 days buses subways and trolleys. We got our money's worth just from that.

Hopped the Subway to the Termini Station and changed line to the Coliseum Went to the head of the line it was amazing to see some place that was used for such a barbaric sport. The first 100 day it was open the killed 2000 humans and 9000 animals

We were leaving when Kathleen informed me that we were stopping for lunch some where we could sit down.LOL I get going and forget about very thing we went across from the Coliseum to a little cafe that had out side seating ordered a liter of the hose red. I had the 4 cheese nokee and Kathleen had the lasagna Great lunch.

On two the Roman forum after I read the map wrong and we walked up hill to a dead end for a hour we turned around and found the entrance. Hard to believe how close all of these building were to one another also how high Rome of today is compared to then they just keep building on top of the century before rubble.

We headed back to the subway station. We are standing there when these 2 twenty something good looking girls walk in front of us. One turns and asks me if they are on they are on the right side to go to the Termini Station I tell her yes and then tell she looks real familiar Well she rolls her eyes at me then Kathleen rolls her eyes at me. I ask her if She was on team Canada at the last World Championships her eyes got real big . She asked me if I how I knew that I told her my son was on Team USA. She wanted to know who he was when I told her. They talk all the time on face book . It seems that she came here in the summer for a vacation and didn't leave her job was handing out flyers for a pub crawl. She wanted us to come for New years eve told her we would think about it.

Got back to the hotel had a drink and headed out to dinner we walked through Plaza Popolo and down to the Spanish steps had our first real chestnuts roasted over a fire from a street vendor. Wandered a round and took in all the sights everything was decorated for Christmas yet.

We went to La Rumpa it is one block to the right of the Spanish steps in a court. It was a great meal We split a mixed seafood antipasti and a fist course of fettuccine. Kathleen had a lamb dish and I had probably the best meal of my life it was rabbit done Tuscon style. We wandered around some more looking into al the designers shops and headed back to the hotel.

What a great Day 3 Tom! Small world meeting up with the girl from Team Canada- that is amazing.

And I must say, the two of you look very relaxed and happy with your glasses of wine!

Tom - I am loving your report AND your pics! It is making me want to go back so badly! I LOVE Rome (and Florence). Villa Borghese is by far my favorite museum there. Funny that they do tours now as before you could spend however long you wanted in there and it wasn't packed!

Also, the first time we went, that wood floor wasn't in the Coliseum that allows you to walk out on it. the last time we were there, we loved getting to go out on it.

Thanks!!!!!
