Bahamas suggestions

Post by Lovermont »

Hi all,

I thought I was going to go back to St. John with a group of girlfriends, but it looks like the plan has changed and we're going to Nassau instead. I'm not too happy at this point, but have decided I'll make the most of it.

Anyone familiar with Nassau out there? And if so, tell me what's to like about it. My heart was really set on returning to St. John.

Thanks!

We've been there several times. Where are you staying? Paradise Island has some nice beaches, but they have wave action. Out towards Cable Beach it a calmer bay. There's some intersting history there, also some good shopping. It's a busy Cruise ship stop. Snorkeling is awesome...best enjoyed by taking a charter out.

Let me know where you're staying, I may know of the area.

When are you going? We were there last March and I thought it was cold. We stayed at Sandals but went to Atlantis a few times during our trip to gamble. If you don't gamble people watching in the casino is great. Soo much money there. The gambling is insane. Ive been to Vegas many times and never saw the money being laid down like I saw at Atlantis. Crazy!

I think we're looking at the Westwind II Club. We're going in the middle of May. I like to hike on STJ; I get the feeling that the Bahamas are not really a hikers paradise. Is the snorkeling good right off the beach, or do we have to book an excursion? (I think the resort is on Cable Beach.)
I need to be sold on this as my heart was set on STJ.

NO, not any hiking in the Bahamas....too flat. And the island themselves are not all that pretty. The big draw is the water.

We have always taken an excursion to snorkel. At cable beach there were so many watersports going on that I wouldn't have attempted to snorkel there. Before Atlantis was built on Paradise Island there was a wonderful inlet that was great for snorkeling, but the resort did something with it.

The weather will be perfect in May and probably not too crowded. It won't compare to STJ, in my opinion...but again the water is just so beautiful.

Go to Cafe Matisse, sit outside in the courtyard, at night with the candlelight, it's beaufitul, the food is wonderful, not the cheapest, but a night to remember: http://www.cafe-matisse.com/
If you like to hike, you can sort of get the feel by walking the entire marine park at Atlantis, if you go through everything it is alot of walking, through caves, with views into the huge tanks everywhere, very, very cool. Enjoy!

Thank you for your positive comments and suggestions. I'm sure we'll have a good time. I'll just have to get back to STJ in the future for my St. John fix.

Best,

My wife and I are going to Nassau at the end of June...our 3rd trip there. Can't afford the airfare to St John this year. We scored airfare from San Antonio to Nassau for $330pp on AA vs Houston to St Thomas for $700pp and we don't have to go to Miami.

We stay at Harborside Villas, which is the timeshare part of Atlantis. It's detached from the main resort and is very peaceful. It has a very nice pool that overlooks the water that divides Nassau from Paradise Island.

If you go on a snorkeling excursion, I would go with Stuart Coves. I went with them our first time and was impressed. We,even, snorkeled with Caribbean reef sharks schooling below us. The last time we went with another charter (I can't remember the name) that was located under the Paradise Island bridge. When we anchored, we anchored literally on the reef...I was pi**ed.

At the very least, go to the casino at Atlantis. It rivals Las Vegas and it's the only place to get anything free...the drinks!! There are no water fountains anywhere on the resort. So, if you get thirsty, head for the casino and sit at a penny machine or in the sports book area and drink free for the evening. I know I'm cheap, but I refuse to spend $6.00 for a bottle of Nassau tap water in an Atlantis plastic bottle

The shopping is fairly decent downtown. It reminds me of St. Thomas on a smaller scale. The straw market is just a big flea market...we usually skip going in there.

We haven't eaten at a lot of restaurants. We had Pizza Hut deliver and ate at the Hard Rock. We take food to cook in the condo...just like St John, groceries are expensive.

Have fun!!!

Good advice! I'm meeting with "the girls" this evening, so we should be able to decide where we're going very soon - Bahamas vs St. John. All of your input is helping me get a little more excited about the Bahamas. Much appreciated.
