So,- Which is your favorite beach, and why?
This time we went to Gibney and I think that is my new favorite - hadn't been there before and we loved it - soft sand, nice views, lovely swimming, calm waters, excellent palms for shade - lovely. I also am very partial to Trunk - an absolutely gorgeous beach and I love the peaceful snorkeling there.

It IS hard to limit it to one. However I will have to say Trunk, but only when it is not crowded in the early morning. I like the fact that it is #1 Beautiful, #2- has facilities and food, #3 life guards, #4 pretty good snorleking, #5 the first beach I hit when visiting STJ for the first time.
Maho is great too.
When I brought the whole family we each had a favorite.
Daughter- Cinnamom- more guys
Son- Maho- snorkeling and turtles
Husband- Waterlemon- the snorkeling and hike

Our first STJ beach, like many of you, was Trunk. It is a great beach, we enjoyed it that day and it was the one that got us hooked on STJ. It is, however sometimes crowded and overused. When the ships are in it's a bit of a problem.
Our current favorite beach is Hawksnest. The parking is close without feeling like you have a bumper directly behind you. The facilities are a plus. The main reason is that the water, coral, marine life, view and atmosphere are exactly what we think a tropical beach should be. Put me there after a great two-tank dive with a sandwich from Deli Grotto and I am set.
A week from right now I may have another choice for the number one beach; but for today, this is it.

PS We are about 48 hours from stowing our tray tables and placing our seats in their upright and most uncomfortable position. Not that I'm counting or anything.

Jim I have to agree with you about Hawksnest for snorkeling. I enjoyed going there with you and Diana.
You two have fun! I know that you will!

Doesn't get any better than Gibney for me too, but I'll nominate Denis up as a close second...it's a lot like Gibney, just a little tougher to get to.
in addition to having all the usual STJ beach qualities you want - soft sand, shade, good snorkeling, limited visitors, great views (Trunk is across the bay from it) - Denis also has the added bonus of not being clearly marked and doesn't seem to show up on a lot of tourist maps or guides.
So like Gibney, it has a certain "secret club" aspect going for it even though it's not really that big of a secret.

It’s not about yesterday or tomorrow...It’s about today, for come what may – Sun, rain, or hurricane – we've only time for a smile, and none for sorrow
I'm not a big beach lay-arounder but I can understand everyone's choices. The one beach I am able to spend a lot of time at is Brown's Bay. It takes a little effort to get to, it is sandy and when I'm tired of the book I'm reading I can snorkel either the right side or left. When I get tired of that I can wander around the ruins. It is hardly ever "busy" and Skinny's is on the way home.
If the wind is up I'll settle on Francis. Although Maho is great as a wind default it is usually a little too crowded for me.

Ya know, I've been reading these posts, and with each one I'm saying to myself "yep, I love that one too," so I went back to find a list I'd made sometime ago, listing all the reasons I love so many places on STJ. Here's my list:
Lovermont wrote:There was a topic on the "other forum" regarding Trunk Bay, and whether or not it was a beach worthy of a visit from an overseas "beach lover". There were many replies singing the praises of beaches other than Trunk, and it got me thinking about giving awards to the beaches of St. John.
Feel free to dispute my list or add your own awards. Let's face it, every beach on STJ is special in some way.
St. John Beach Oscars
The winner of “Most Beautiful Beach from a lookout, but do I really need to pay the $4 to hang out with cruise ship passengers” is – Trunk
The winner of “I’d like a beach with facilities so that I can change into my swimsuit and perhaps chill awhile and eat my lunch and enjoy the view” is – Hawksnest
The winner of “Wow, am I glad I discovered this beach; I will be back” is Denis
The winner of “Beach that’s easiest to get to directly from the road (and takes my breath away)” is – Maho
The winner of “Amazing glass water and beautiful sailboats moored right in front of me” is – Francis
The winner of “The trip getting there is half of the fun” is – Little Lameshur
The winner of “I’ll keep this on my list for a great snorkel” is – A TIE! Blue Cobblestone and Haulover
The winner of “I’d like a beach lounger and an order of Conch Fritters please” is – Vie’s beach/Hansen Beach
The winner of “I feel like renting a kayak and discovering that Cay over there” is – Cinnamon Bay
The winner of “It’s raining on the north shore, where do we go now” is – Salt Pond
The winner of “I’m tired of beautiful white sand, I want crashing waves” is – Drunk Bay
The winner of “I’d like to have some fantastic ruins with my beach, with a side of turtles and starfish” is – Waterlemon
The winner of “I’m staying in Cruz Bay, and I’d like to walk to a beach” is – A walk to Salomon and Honeymoon

Don't get me wrong, ya'll!
We spent most of our time on Maho. That place is just magic to me.
I'd been to Gibney before, briefly; just walked down & checked it out.
This past trip we spent the better part of a day on Gibney. Incredible, no doubt.
Just sitting there with a chilly drink, and splashing around was gorgeous.
I could do without the trek up & down, thus Maho is my all time favorite. Maho is better for a good snorkel too, as far as I'm concerned. Many, many wonderfully delicious memories...
