Good ideas Gromit.

Ned won't participate in the splitting suitcase thing either! Why I have no clue. And then after packing his own, he decides it can all fit in one and starts stuffing our stuff in the side pockets and shoves our stuff in the kid suitcase and even in the food box and it really pisses me off! Especially since it always happens right before we are leaving! grr...

he does this to drive me crazy you know.

OMG! They must be related!

A typical packing excerise at our house -

Hubby marches about declaring everything of his will fit into a carry-on. (mind you, he wears 14/15 shoes and needs to take full size of every health and beauty aid - shaving cream, toothpaste, entire packes of extra razor blades)

He fits some of the stuff in a carry on and then tells me he has "just a few things I need to put in my bag" Then runs down the stairs as if I won't protest if he isn't in the room. A few things is a giant mound.

I clear my throat.

He sulks up to the attic to get a regular sized bag..

I guess I'm lucky. I generally coordinate the packing lists and forward to Mr. Gromit who reviews and adds what he thinks needs to be on those lists.

About two weeks out we start pulling stuff and puting it into the second BR in stacks.

We follow the aforementioned procedure from there.

Our only rule is that you have to be able to carry what you bring -- by yourself, if need be. Alhough my dear sweet husband always offers to help. But it's a good rule to have.

Each year we whittle the packing list down more and more. But I still need to check a bag.

If we're really good we just share one big bag between us to check and then max out carry on allowance.

I've got a "Ballanza" (http://www.balanzza.com/pages/?page_id=146) and I LOVE that thing. Allows me to get to 49.999999 lbs without going over and paying a fee!

It's my way of say "F" U to the airlines. If I'm going to have to pay I am going to MAX THAT SH!T OUT.

Just sayin. 8)
*Another fine scatterbrained production

As a carry-on convert, I will sing the praises of the Osprey Porter 46 http://www.ospreypacks.com/Packs/PorterSeries/Porter46/. I purchased this shortly after our lost baggage trip. It's changed the way I view traveling. I don't hate airports as much; I don't worry about long queues checking in; I don't have to pay a bunch of porters. Dare I say that I love my Osprey Porter 46?
I paid about $65 for this bag because a friend of mine at EMS gave me a deal. They retail for $99. So, ya figure the airlines are charging you about $30 - $40 roundtrip to check your bags now; that bag paid for itself after two roundtrips.
I'll admit, I try to pack lightly, but I can fit my snorkel gear (fins too), my laptop, and all my clothing, footwear and toiletries in this bag. My personal item that can fit under the seat in front of me is my Haven't I Seen You On The Forum tote bag!
