While I certainly don't want too much speculation about my secret identity, I must proclaim that I am NOT the Coral Bay resident that Bert logically assumed from my use of that name (I was actually thinking of the hurricane). I apologize to all real Hugos!!!!

Hugo's last post on this thread reads like an attorney, and I'm too new to STJ to know who Bert's referring to. The only Hugo I know is a hurricane, and I didn't know him personally. So, every time I see one of his posts, that's what I think of. But, he's obviously knowledgeable about STJ history. Hope you're recording it all somewhere other than here, Hugo.

While there 7/10-7/24, we heard about a machete wielding older gentleman. He lives above Sweet Plaintains. A tourist eating at Sweet Plaintains parked his rental car blocking his driveway. When the gentleman came to tell the guy to move his car, the guy got an attitude and words were exchanged. We heard the rental car got the raw end of the deal - the machete took off the driver's side mirror. The plant lady at Skinny's was trimming bushes outside and said the gentleman did not like tourists! I'm glad I didn't hear the story before our dinner at Sweet Plaintains!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have been just a lurker on this forum until now. You will see me over on some of the other forums (one of them made me a destination expert for some reason )
You will definately see a lot more people with machetes that are NOT threatening, but you will see some that are. I know that there is increasing frustration for the "native" virgin islanders who seem to be losing more land, and have to deal with a government that seems to be a lot more for the people who visit their island than the people who actually live on it. I can understand their frustration....I really don't know anyone who likes people walking through their property without permission. And I certainly get a little PO'ed when people block my driveway. Not saying I would start swinging a machete around though!

Not sure where you heard that a man lives above Sweet Plantains as Rose and Prince the owners live there - in the many, many, many times we have eaten there, I have never seen (or heard of) a machete gentleman

I do know that they ask that you do not block driveways and either Prince or one of the staff at Sweet Plantains will come out and show you where it is OK to park

I only say this as I would hate to discourage people from eating there - fabulous food

Machetes are our most basic garden tool. It's kind of the "catch all". I have several, including: "The good one" which is sharp and good for mowing the lawn, "the big one" which is used for cutting down trees, "the crappy one" which I get to use because I haven't mastered the art of it all.

stjohnjulie, I love the image of you practicing with the crappy machete so that you move up to the good one. Ninja visions.... dances with machetes.

Pia, we heard from the plant lady trimming bushes at Skinny's when we were there one day for lunch. I don't know where she got her info but I thought since she lives in the area she knew the scoop. I'm glad to know that this man doesn't live above Sweet Plantains because it is our favorite restaurant and we frequent it every trip. Sorry if I passed on a location that is false!

RickG, if you see ME with a machete, it is cause for fear. The crappy machete is the one that I bought and managed to mess up trying to cut GRASS...yes, I can put a chip in the blade by doing nothing more then bending some grass.
