Post-STJ Blues

Post by flip-flop »

I am back and working on getting 1/2 my pictures online and eventually the other 1/2 off our not so waterproof "waterproof" olympus camera. The camera is toast but hopefully the pictures are recoverable!

(I should have gone with my gut and stuck with canon. Luckily, I took our beat-down canon with us and got the 2nd half of the trip photos with that. After playing in Maho surf with the olympus waterproof to 33FT camera, it just went kaput. We were never deeper than 3 feet.)

Our trip home was uneventful and I am happy to report they let the baby back into the country even though the Continental Agent said EVERYONE GOING TO THE USVI NEEDS A PASSPORT! and he didn't have one! Um, no, they don't. She actually said to me, "We've been deporting a lot of people."

Really, where do you deport them to or from? He's a US citizen going to a US territory. Will he have to stay in STJ? Cause if so, I am never getting him a passport because someone will have to stay to take care of him.

I digress...School and work starts up tomorrow but trip report will soon come. I promise.

A couple teasers...

Hi Flip Flop, glad you had a great time, what happened with your camera? I bought my husband that camera, we have not used it yet snorkeling. I also bought the housing just in case. I'm glad I did now. I lost a pentax when the battery door popped open while in the water.

We didn't even get to take it snorkeling! We used it for 2 days dry and then 1 day in and out of the water at Maho. The next morning dead dead dead. Not the battery. Dead. Apparently water go in where it shouldn't have so probably just a bad seal. Hubby is going to get it replaced, but still. I was PEEVED. Majorly. We have the Canon powershot and that thing is rock solid. Its taken a lot of abuse, I just couldn't talk myself into paying over $100 for a housing for a beat up camera when I could get the new olympus for around $270 I think it was.

Hey flip-flop...Great pics. I also brought my brand-new just out of the box olympus 1030 sw down to STJ in July, and don't you know it, the thing leaked not two minutes into my first snorkel at Trunk Bay. An yes, the doors were all closed/latched, as I made sure to push on them to be sure they were closed prior to getting in the water...junk as far as I'm concerned. Believe it or not, Best Buy actually took it back.

Next time, I'm buying a Canon with a housing.

Welcome home! My friend John bought the same Olympus camera just before our Bahamas trip. Not 10 minutes after he barely took it in to snorkel....dead-o.

Glad you're back! Well, not glad your fun, fun vacation is over, but glad you are home safe. Okay. You know what I mean.

You should both ask your trip insurance people if they would cover you to return with a working camera, and take the weeks worth of underwater pictures that you missed out on!

It could happen  !

Flip...your little dude and his daddy pix is sweet and your daughter is growing up! She looks so cute ! I have 2 boys (big now) so I have a special spot for son's, while little girls intrigue me....totally different! I look forward to more trip info and hope you can settle back into your routine w/o too much continued blues!

OH...how did the new Keen's work for you?

Now I am more confused than ever regarding underwater cameras. Who has something they are happy with??? I want to buy one for next trip. I am a happy Canon powershot owner too and "could" purchase the underwater housing for that, but I feared loosing that to water and would have nothing. Please help me decide!

Welcome back! Your children are growing so fast. I do want a smiling pic of your little boy. I remember how cute they were. Please tell-which Olympus were you using. We just bought the 790 not too long ago. Have not tried it yet in the water. Now I'm worried.

Oh, flip-flop, do I ever understand! We got in at 1 AM last night and to make it worse I had to work today, on Labor Day! And then when I got to my office, I have the STJ calendar on the wall and needed to turn the page to September--voila, Cinnamon Bay, where I was 2 days ago! Boo hoo. I was a tired, sad girl today.

Great pics, and again, it was wonderful to meet you and your lovely family. I hope to work on my trip report this weekend, once I can get all of our photos loaded. I'm sorry about the Olympus--we thought about getting the exact same camera, but at the last minute my husband splurged and we got a Canon Powershot G9 with the housing (an early birthday present for me, he said!). We had a few condensation problems with the housing when it was in the water too long, but for the most part it was great. I would have been mightily peeved if a brand new camera malfunctioned like yours did, but I'm glad you got some photos with your older camera. Good luck tomorrow--I know what you are going through!

Same here. Canon A80 Powershot with underwater case 3 trips no problems.

Whats the problem with the Olympus? Mfg defects? Can you tell what leaked i.e. battery compartment or mem card slot? Its not like you are opening and closing the seal a lot like you are with a case where you would think you might be more likely to have something go wrong (sand, stretched/cracked O ring, etc.)

Water got in the battery compartment. We tried everything to dry it out as we'd seen a post where someone had theirs get wet but then once it dried it was fine. NO dice. DEAD. Still DEAD.

I have a friend with an olympus so I am hoping to at least pull the pictures off the card. :(

Oh no ... I just ordered the 770sw on Friday from Amazon. Seemed like a good price $199 ... 33 ft ... optical zoom. And I'm going to the Cape this weekend so wanted to try it out. I guess I'll have to try it and then send it back, if I have problems. :(

Glad you had a good trip Flip. Hope you can get those pictures. Looking forward to your trip report !!!
