Monday Morning in Coral Bay

We arose early this morning, all the better to enjoy a gorgeous and peaceful start to the day in Coral Bay. You can sense it's a holiday as the normal bustle of workers heading off to their jobs and the dingy traffic on the bay is at a minimum. No, this is a morning for the hummingbirds, bananaquits, and small doves that inhabit our hillside. The goats have come and gone from the ballfield. Perhaps they know there's a Labor Day party there this afternoon. The big parade starts at 11 at the Love City Mini-Mart and winds it's way to the ballfield where there will be food, crafts and music for the rest of the day. Small town celebration, Coral Bay style. As for us, Maho is in the cards. Even when we were in the throes of building here, Maho was our solace, and in many ways, it's become our favorite island beach. That's where we'll be this afternoon, soaking in the serenity, and swimming with the turtles. Note to those who have asked: The mosquitoes aren't that bad... Later...

Note regarding the note regarding mosquitoes: We spent a couple of hours at Maho this afternoon. Yikes! They were swarming along the beach and became the answer to the question "Why isn't anyone here on such a beautiful afternoon?" They even followed us into the water! So from a hundred feet out we looked at our forlorn beach chairs where we had hoped to do some world class napping, speculating on how many would be able to nibble on us when we eventually HAD to come ashore. It was a game of diminishing returns as we realized the later we waited, the thicker they would be. After about 2 hours we made our move. If anyone had been there to see us they would have wondered how these middle-aged and slightly out of shape specimens of desk jobs moved so fast. If I could write a song about it I would call it "The Swarming Mosquito Sand Dance". Yo, Gene: Next album maybe? So back in the shelter of our home we nursed our wounds with mango and rum. From the deck we've been listening to the music from the Labor Day party on the ballfield. Caribbean rhythms, good food, good drink, and a cool breeze with no bugs. Now this is a perfect evening...

I am so jealous, Randy! Going through major St John withdrawal today....

We found Francis and Maho unbearable with the skeeters and gave up on them last week. No bug problems at Trunk or Gibney or Little Lameshur; a little buggier at Cinnamon and Leinster, but okay as long as you weren't too close to the bushes.
