The reason I'm asking is cause we got to STJ after 5pm in December and they had no probs leaving the keys for us at all. Of course I've been renting with them for the better part of 10 years.

I will say this, kindness goes a long way with their staff and they will bend over backwards for you if you are nice. But perhaps their interaction with the other person in your group set you on the wrong track with Cynthia et al.

Also if I know it's going to be tight with me getting over before 5 pm I can usually figure that out before we leave home. A call or e-mail as a heads up and how can we fix this usually helps as well.

My interactions with STJ car rental have been wonderful over the past decade.

Just my .02.
*Another fine scatterbrained production

Gromit, I suspect that was the issue (the not-so-nice people), which is why I added that to my post. We hadn't rented from them before, as it was our first trip to STJ, but I probably won't rent from them again unless I am POSITIVE that I can make it on time. It does say on their web site that if you can't make it by the time they close to find somewhere else to rent from -- or it did last time I looked. I guess the girl who booked them didn't realize that. Actually, she just thought that we could somehow make the 4 p.m. ferry when some people didn't land until 3:30, and she had been to STJ before. Oh well, lessons learned...

But Lulu76, please tell us you had a great time otherwise?? There are several good rental agencies on island, but Courtesy has been great for me.

we rented from stj car rental a few years ago-- they refused to leave the keys for us, but allowed the owners of the place we were staying (garden by the sea) to pick the car up for us. they said they had a bad experience with leaving the keys and no longer did that anymore.... we rented from them a few times, but don't anymore because of the inavailability of spots in their lot. i'm not sure what their policies are now, or if they are consistent.

we usually rent from conrad now, who allows you to pick up to 5 or 6, I believe.

Oh, my trip to STJ was excellent or else I wouldn't be going back in two months. I love the island, and I even loved our little Jeep we got from STJ Car Rental. However, as I am making the vehicle arrangements this time, I am finding that there are some companies that'll work with a late arrival and some that won't. Right now, however, I am leaning toward renting on STT. We'll see...
