Claritin reduces/prevents the swelling. Though sometimes its hard to get past that annoying whine to get them to take it. My oldest scratches herself bloody if I don't give it to her.

Yesterday the mosquitoes in McLean were worse than we got hit last April during the great STJ mosquito plague. We were pulling carrots on the garden and I saw (no exaggeration) more than 20 on my daughter. Christine is on the hunt for Waterguys antibug devices.

My kids will probably all end up with two heads but I am a HUGE FAN of Ben's (in the little orange bottle).

Thanks alot Tom. You have saved my trip. I was starting to itch just reading Pia's thread. They ate me alive the last two trips. I read the web site and all the questions and answers. I have a question for you if you don't mind. I am buying the bulk (10) pack and a few machines. Do you think it will be a problem with checking that small amount of butane in my luggage. I didn't see anything on the web-site about this. Thanks, Jorge

You'll be very glad to know, I too suffer from being a mosquito magnet, but when we're on the boat, there are few to none, because of the breeze that is almost always blowing. Just have to watch going ashore at dusk, that gets me into real trouble. I got over 200 bites, from being at Foxy's for 15 minutes one night.
NOT going to do that again. Have a great trip! Where are you staying?

Yup all set. 2 weeks!!! We arrive in STT on the 4th and leave on the 19th.

We should make plans to hook up! Maybe we should do what I did with California girl. We met on the beach, beside Annenburg, and brought them to the boat. It's a great way to snorkel Waterlemon. Think about it and we'll make a plan.

I'm curious about the butane thing and getting it on STT/STJ. When I was last down there I helped a friend do some construction work. I told him that up here I use a Paslode cordless framing nailer. They're good when running a compressor isn't possible, plus you don't have to drag a hose up and down ladders. They work with a combination of rechargable battery and butane type gas cartridge. He told me that they weren't usable on STJ because they couldn't legally import the gas cartidges. I wonder if the same restrictions apply to the bug thingy?

Ah, if only...DEET is the only thing that seems to keep mosquitos off of me but RickG is highly allergic. We really don't want to spend our STJ vacation at the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center!

Hey cupcake, all you have to do is scrub off the DEET real well before bed! I could use the pool brush and some driveway degreaser if you fall asleep in a pool chair.

Have you been nipping out lately to get hits of DEET at lunch?

I hear Diazinon and Malathion work as well as DEET without all of that nasty toxicity and the tendency to dissolve plastics and cause X chromosome breaks. I'd like to try Imadin since it is even less toxic and is a broad-spectrum insecticide that does double duty on fruit trees, but it is not approved for non-commercial use so you can only get 5 pounds at a time. Can I bring my backpack pesticide sprayer as a carryon?

Maybe I'll just stick to the picaridine-based sprays like Cutter Advanced. They work as well as DEET and produce fewer human mutations.

Cutter Advanced seemed to work for me when I first started using it a couple of years ago. I douse in the stuff now and the swarm still lands. I picked up a Thermacell today at lunch. I'm firing that bad boy up tonight and see how it does.

Woodsman Fly Dope from northern Maine. It's a cross between moose piss and pine tar, mixed with DEET. The stuff keeps blackflies away. Mosquitos don't have a chance. You'll be safe, but so alone.

Okay, when I saw that one of the ingredients was moose piss, I had to look it up. The website gives the history of how it started, just some guys mixing up their own brew of repellent. My question is, how do you go about collecting moose piss

Ok, this Thermacell lantern seems to work. Prior to "firing the bad boy up" we did a test count of the blood suckers out back sans bug spray. We each had 8 to 12 continuously land on us. The lantern takes about 15 minutes to heat up to where the allethrin starts to work. By that time, there were none flying around us. Just to test again, we walked out into the yard where one of our vegetable beds is and they immediately started swarming. Back to the porch, no mosquitos.
