St. John on a budget
I think all the advice above is very good (as always!) We stayed at Star Villas for our honeymoon (all we could afford at the time) and found them to be very decent and a great bargain for the $$$.
As for a suggestion on transportation you could always wing it and hitchhike.
While we would NEVER pick up hitchhikers here at home, we have never had a problem doing so on STJ. Just stick your arm out and point in the direction you want to go and folks will usually give you a ride.
Obviously it's crap shoot, but we are happy to give people rides all the time-- locals and visitor's alike.
If we have the room, we are happy to do it!

I think time of year is the biggest factor. I went once in Sept (pre-kids)and loved it for many reasons. First, I found great airfare because the kids are usually just going back to school and there aren't many people vacationing. I paid $89.00 per night for Gallows Pt ( its now stay for 7,pay for 5 nts). I only rented a Jeep for three days since we could walk to town and since it's low season it's at a cheaper rate. There were alot of restaurants closed but enough open when we wanted to go out. The beaches, restaurants and bars were desserted like when we first started going to St.John which was great, no problem getting a seat inside or out at Woody's.
To save money in general:
1.try booking mid-week, the airfare is usually cheaper Tues-Thurs and the airport is less crowded.
2. If you go in low season, purchase you airline tickets first and since there is only 2 of you, wait for a last minute special for a place to stay. caribbeanvilla.com always has a list of last minute specials on their site for villas and condos.
3. eat in and make your own drinks,it's always cheaper and you can always tip you honey other ways
Good luck, I hope you can swing it.
