traitor trip report

Post by bill »

I am truly a St. John lover, but this year decided to go to the Cayman Islands. It really was my daughters choice, but in the end she couldn't join us due to her job. I actually felt guilty when I booked it, like a traitor to St John!

We had a great time, expecially on Little Cayman. How could you not enjoy the caribbean! Oh the water. Little cayman is definitely on my short list of great islands. grand cayman was fine too, but way to built up for our taste.

I missed St john the whole time. Like leaving an old friend behind. I am already trying to plan a trip for next summer - St John! There really is something unique about St John, it's magical to me. Sounds corny but that's how i feel! Can't wait to get back.

We felt the same way on a recent trip to TCI (not so much guilt because it was work-related) but a longing for STJ.

Bill - Lex is looking for info on Cayman Brac. Did you get there? Check out the Off Topic forum if you can help him out. :D

Thanks CG.

Bill

I would love to hear a bit about Little Cayman if you'd be willing to step over to the Off Topic forum where I did post a question about Cayman Brac. I'll probably put up another expanded post over there. I haven't gotten much info about the Brac, but have stumbled onto a couple of other interesting places.

Thanks.

We do enjoy returning again and again to a favorite place. There's a comfort level and it reconnects us with roots and memories. We settle back in quickly and quite soon it's like we never left. Or like we've awoken from a nap during which we dreamt we were somewhere else. But we also enjoy the excitement of going somewhere we've never been before. It's all fresh, filled with surprises and discoveries. It's all unknown. And there's a level of uncertainty, excitement and anxiety which is pretty stimulating. Of course, I need to approach it with an open mind and spirit and engage it for what it is. If I just compare it to other favorite places, it's likely to disappoint.

I agree with you, Lex, that there is a comfort in returning to a beloved island, but also an excitement in discovering a new island. I visited St John for the first time in May of this year. I did "get it", but also felt I would have loved it more ten years ago. The new construction around Cruz Bay was not my idea of island improvement. I've seen how "progress" has sucked the charm out of islands like Grand Cayman and Cozumel in the past 15 years, and hope the same doesn't happen to St. John. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are trying hard not to repeat the mistakes of Grand Cayman. Heck, the people of GC go to CB and LC to vacation!

That happened for us. We started going to STJ in the 80s and were perfectly happy for many years. Eventually more and more changes came and it was no longer such a good fit for us. We miss what's been lost. We'll get back again, but we're looking for other places that have more of what STJ had when we firs fell in love with it and less of what we wish hadn't come to be there.
