Does anyone know about Rock Ridge Road?

Post by mcdomzal »

We are looking at Mar de Amores villa and it says that it's at the end of Rock Ridge Rd. at 700ft. The views are great, but it sounds like it might be a little hairy to get to. Being from Chicago, we aren't the best "hill/switchback" drivers.

Does anyone know about either this villa or this road?

Thanks!

Rock Ridge Road is the first left at the top of the hill after you pass the Westin. We have stayed there before and it is probably one of the easiest places navigation-wise that we’ve ever stayed.

By STJ standards I'd say it's a very easy road. You should be fine :)

We stayed at a house up on Rock Ridge. It wasn't bad at all. The driveway was a little challenging but the road itself was fine. We were about 1/2 way up.

I second Flips advice. The road is fine but ask about the driveway. We rented the owners other house last summer. If you call them they will proabaly reccomend a 4 wheel drive. The road is well paved all the way.

We stayed at the next to last villa on Rock Ridge Rd. (Inn Paradise). The road is paved all the way. There is one pretty sharp blind corner, but there isn't very much traffic up there at all. The views are great and it's very convenient to wherever you go. Say hello to the iguanas for us....

Joining the chorus, Rock Ridge is a good St. John road. The first time I drove it to the top was after sunset and I was able to get around just fine.

We'll be half-way up Rock Ridge in November at Allesandra.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I feel much better. Now I just have to convince my husband since he does most of the driving.......I'm sure my 17 year old son would love to give it a try! (just kidding, of course :D )

we've stayed upper rockridge twice and there's a left switch back between ambiance and lapalpa and a right between allesandra and treasure ridge, but both are easier than east bound on northshore approaching peter bay entrance. word of caution though on exiting rock rd north bound toward cruz bay on south shore rd. you cannot see oncoming traffic in either direction and you must crossover to left lane. oncoming lights help at night; but during day, all you can do is listen and gunnit across.

you'll love views from that area.

It is not considered impolite or impolitic to use some loud horn blowing on a blind curve or before entering the main road from a blind driveway. One of the collectors items here for years was a rental sticker that said " Keep Left and Honk horn frequently"

It dawned on me as I headed back to work that I had a video of our jeep ride from the top of Rock Ridge Road to the Starfish market. The quality is not as good as the guys from On-St John get, but it's not bad for a $100 dollar digital camera! The other thing you'll notice is the dorky guy doing the play by play and the color commentary (LOL). Man is he annoying...

You'll see the two sharp curves. One you'll hear me comment that it's our "favorite" and the other one you'll see a pick up truck parked on the right side and villa construction on the left.

We too chuckled about having to listen or look for lights every time we got to the end of Rock Ridge. Be careful! Heheheeeee.....it's really an easy road to drive. As I said before, there is very little traffic.

Great Video! When I was there, I stayed in Coral Bay, so I never even saw that road. Will certainly do more exploring next time!

Yes, easy drive. One of the intersections along the way, Travler's Trail, will get you the back way over to Gift Hill Road which you can take up to Centerline so you don't have to go through town if you don't want. Take a look at Google Maps and you'll see what I mean even though South Shore Gift Hill Roads are mislabled all as Southside Road.
