Talking about STJ or STT or STX
I was showing my vacation pics to a co-worker and she was loving them. She wanted to know all STJ and then emailed me for links, etc.
I am a little
but I actually tried to steer her away. I had worked very closely with her for a few years and I know that there is no way in he** she will ever "get it" The island is just not her style and I really don't want her to go.
Do you every try and steer people away from your vacation island?

If I know that someone is not going to 'get STJ' I tell them up front what I think will not fit their idea of the perfect island. i.e. if you know they just want to be waited on and catered to then I tell them that STJ is the kind of place that you can't reserve your beach chair and run up a flag for a drink on command. You schelp your own stuff to and from the beach and clean up after yourself. I tell them we pack our own lunches and beverages in a cooler and take it to the beach and you turn your Jeep in clean at the end of the trip. If someone expects to rent a condo on the beach or stay in a 5 star hotel STJ will probably disappoint.
I have someone that wants to join me on my next trip down, and the three of us that are going for sure, want nothing to do with it!
This person is always stressed out... likes to hop from bar to bar, (in the Keys) rather than take the bar to the beach... will pull off the side of the road to watch the sunset (for about a second)...and cannot just sit still, chill, and take it all in!
It could be the very type of place she needs to shed all of those demon ways...but not on my watch!

We have one friend that we know will never get STJ. She is SOOO high maintenance! so we NEVER tell her that we are going. She lives in another state, but comes to visit quite often. She tried to visit last year as we were leaving for our trip. We LIED and told her Tom (that's her cousin, and she stays with him when she visits) was going to Chicago for a business trip!!
This led to a massive StJohnGate coverup, because his family is quite large so we had to get a lot of people on board with the lie. While we were in STJ, it was a running joke - Wow - I had no idea it was so beautiful in Chicago
Well, last week she visited and we went to my family's beach house in NH. We pull up and see that one of the cousins from last year's trip is there with her family. I had to RUN ahead of her down to the beach and warn them all NOT TO SAY A WORD about St. John!
Hey, it may seem cruel, but my yearly STJ vacation gets me through a lot and I will not have it ruined!

I hear St. Martin is a tropical paradise, and there's the bathing suit optional beaches. Vieques, PR is really off the beaten track. And closer to home, the Bahamas are the ultimate vacation destination. Barbados has some excellent time-shares. St. Thomas has beautuful beaches, shopping, and excellent dining in Frenchtown. St. John? You'd be bored stiff...
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

I’ve said before “if you want the kind of vacation where you lounge around on beach chairs at a resort and have people waiting on you serving food and drinks, then STJ is not your kind of island…on STJ you take a cooler to the beach and hike to some of the best spots…”
