Over the weekend we traveled to West Palm Beach to visit the in-laws. My mother-in-law is in a book club and they recently read Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum. She highly recommended it, so I started reading it Saturday morning and couldn't put it down until reading the final page on the plane Sunday evening. It's a not to be missed read.

[quote="silverheels"]Just read a piece on the AOL site about the ten books you should read before you die.
Here they are and how many have you read?
Gone With the Wind
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
The Stand
DaVinci Code
To Kill a Mocking Bird
Angels and Demons
Atlas Shrugged
Catcher in the Rye
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

I've read them all except for Atlas Shrugged. I have no interest in Ayn Rand.
This seems like an odd group of books, doesn't it? No Shakespeare? Why two Dan Brown books and no Jane Austen? What about Lovecraft, or Gabriel Garcia Marquez? No Iliad?? This english major says "humph!"

flip flop-
No Harry Potter!???
I know it has turned out to be one of the grossest marketing monsters in the universe but...
I fondly remember the summer I read that first one and I was hooked. Literally magical.
Harry, Ron, Hermione, The Weasley's, Dumbledore! I actually cried reading one of the most recent.
Considering how many there are (what, like, seven, I forget) and how long that are and how frequent they were, Rowling kept up the quality in every single one of them.
Any other Potter fans out there?

Liam is reading them now. He is halfway through book five. He tore through the first three a couple of months ago, then got a little freaked out by the end of book four and so took a break for a while. Harry Potter is the first book series that has really grabbed his attention. I knew he was hooked when he dumped his alloted time to play his DS or wii to keep reading.

Hey JMQ: My friend an I just finished reading The Ruins, too. The movie came out on DVD yesterday, so we got together last night along with our husbands for a "Ruins Reunion" and more torture. If you survive the agony of the book, check out the DVD. We had a great time with it, and the movie has some interesting/clever plot changes.

I know -- Gromit and my hubby are big fans. It just doesn't do it for me. None of that genre does. I have a hard time with suspension of disbelief.LysaC wrote:flip flop-

I think that's why I am into well written nonfiction lately ala Jon Krakauer. I also love a good mystery or legal thriller.
Plus, I am terrible keeping up with all the characters!!
Yup just finished. Yay the vines won! Plus I saw the ending coming from a mile away.CindyM wrote:Hey JMQ: My friend an I just finished reading The Ruins, too. You had a great time with the DVD? In a running group commentary/Mystery Science Theater 3000 sort of way?

I read The Ruins a few months ago and, yes, the ending was obvious after the first 20 pages but the author just keeps dragging you in deeper, forcing you to feel the claustrophobia, the heat, the humidity, the grossness... I have an icky feeling just thinking of that book. A good icky feeling, though
.
I'm glad that the movie was good. I'll try to catch it. I almost hate watching book-movies after I read the book. Usually so disappointing. Some of the rare exceptions being Misery, Shawshank Redemption, Silence of the Lambs and, of course, Harry Potter
