Happy to help anyone with STX questions. Not sure STX is the best spot for a "quick" trip" - it's a large island and things are pretty spread out. For 7+ days, though, I would heartily recommend it.

I can't figure out why some publications feel compelled to continue to perpetrate the notion that you can't walk ten feet on STX without a nasty crime incident. I have to say that I just don't get it - can't see that the crime rate could be any higher than neighboring islands. I think I read that it's lower than on STT. Islands magazine just touted STX as one of the best places to live in the Caribbean. I'm sure they have crime but where isn't there crime these days? We live in a suburb of Chicago - Billy Graham country, and had a shoot-out at our local Micky D's.

I understand the USVI tourist board has a big campaign coming out that will focus on STX. And, the cruise ships are starting to dock again in Frederikstead in '09. If you talk to the locals they will tell you that they would like a bit more tourism - but not too much more, and they're not too crazy about too many cruise ships coming.

Right now we're planning our '09 trip. Hubs and I will be there together from April 14 - 23 (villa still TBD), then Hubs goes home (poor guy) and my girlfiends come down for 7 days at a gorgeous villa on the east end - with a view of Buck Island and its own white sand swimmable beach:

Can't wait! BTW, as far as beaches go - you will find some sugar-sand and clear and some rocky. The beaches at Buck Island and Sandy Point are similar to the north shore beaches on STJ.

I just got back from 4 days in Cancun and was suprised at how much I liked it. We went for a wedding and stayed at the Riu Cancun and it was great. My biggest suprise was how friendly EVERYBODY was! Especially the staff at the Riu. The rooms weren't anything great but it was nice for a 4 day girls getaway. I had never been to Cancun and never really wanted to go but I had a blast!

I'm not sure if this warning extends all the way down to the Cancun area or not, but nobody I know goes to Mexico anymore. The cops have always been corrupt, but the new thing tends to be the kidnappings. Its become a real industry now. We would always have a BWO (boys weekend out) across the border to play golf. Those days are gone. Even my acquaintences that live across the border say "don't come." Just an FYI.

We were in ST Croix in 2006 and had a wonderful time -we actually won a trip there otherwise we may have never have gone. Though not St. John - it is a beautful island and we met a lot of really nice islanders. We stayed 5 nights at the Divi Carina (part of the trip we won)which was very nice and quiet until MTV arrived for a concert and television shoot - still that was fun too. Then we stayed at Villa Margarita which was one of the nicest places we have been to on any island and extremly reasonable. It is a very large private home with 3 separate suites each containing a kitchen, bath, living area and bedrooms and private balconies. Beautiful views, pool, owners are a fantastic couple. See their site at www.villamargarita.com.

Also the Abacos were great - we went to Great Guana Cay. Gorgeous beaches, very laid back..golf carts to get around - and the quintessential beach bar - Nippers. We rented a house on a sand dune with stairs down to the beach (no footprints but our own for about 5 days) for under $1300 for 8 nights.
