I use thin needlenose pliers. I squish the pliers tight and push them through the fruit, pushing the pit out in front of the pliers. Another idea I have had that I have never tried is to push a straw through the fruit, hopefully dislodging the pit that way.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Okay, don't laugh, but my MIL uses a bobby pin. Sticks the rounded end in and somehow, magically, pops the pit out. It is not something I have ever tried, and may require skill that only old country women have, but....you can always try it. If it doesn't work, just don't tell anyone I said to do it.

We have a cherry pitter that is hand held. It seems like it is of good quality, but it sprays the juice all over which drives my husband nuts and half of the time the pit is still in there. Maybe I will have to try the bobby pin!

I just came across this little gadget on The Food Network Store and remembered this post. It even has a splatter guard. 8)
