St. John lover going to Jamaica- Help!
Thanks for all of your replies! I am going to try to embrace the differences instead of pick at them. I know STJ can be done in less than expensive ways as my ex and I have tried- but after airfare which was over $1000pp from syracuse (last time I checked) jeep rental $500/week and food/drinks at least $500 week. The budget is already at $3000 not including cheap accomadations and spending money. My boyfriend has never been on a "tropical" vacation and has no guage for why one island is more expensive than another. I understand why he thinks the Jamaica trip is the better choice as the total for that trip came to $4000. That included air fare, food/drinks, and the best beachfront suite for 8 nights. Scuba certification and diving is included as well.
I think my ex and I (we are very amicable)have joint custody of STJ. We both cherish our memories there but are glad we moved on separately. Although, he did tell me he will probably never be able to go again as his girlfriend "forbids" it. My BF is more open to going, just concerned about $$ and being bored. I believe once he gets a taste of a tropical R & R vacation he will be more willing to try STJ. Thanks again!

I think you'll have a good time with your boyfriend at the AI, that is what the island is famous for. It's a couples getaway island.
Been to Jamaica three times...the people are generally very friendly. Stayed at Couples Resorts and Sandals. Didn't care for Sandals...seemed to be more of the herd mentality there...lots of people liked it though...Loved Couples in Negril. Good food, great beach, fantastic snorkeling. Again, I will say, the people were very nice and we are planning on doing the AI thing again...someday.

Hi there,
No worries mon, Jamaica is fine...really!! Hubs and I spent a week in Negril back in '95. We stayed at a condo @ Point Village which is right 'tween the Grand Lido (upscale) and Hedonism (crazy & naked)!!
We really had a great time there. We ventured out and got into the local scene at the beach. We got around Negril by cab, which by the way make sure if you do this that they have a gov't sticker on the vehicle. 1st time we jumped in one we had empty beer cans almost knee deep on the floor! Okay, we can deal as long as they weren't the drivers empties
A few places we visited that were worth the effort to get there; YS Falls-very beautiful area, the Black River-so,so depending on your want to see the crocs &/or water fowl & mangroves, Rick's @ the cliffs is great for sunsets and there is this great lil' place I believe called Cosmos right on the beach that had really good local food.
We found the locals to be very friendly and proud. I could never visit a place and never leave the property. That's not my kind of fun, but is for others. Sooo whatever you end up doing ENJOY! Just be respectful to others and they will return. A polite no thanks is all it takes.
Now on the other hand last year we visitd Ocho as a cruise port and we did not like that vibe at all. We hired a pvt driver to drive us up to Nine Mile where Bob Marley was from and that was VERY beautiful and cool. The people up there are wonderful!! I do "feel" for the kids and find myself giving 'em a few bucks here and there. If you have a choice stay away from the ship ports cuz the locals are way more agressive towards visitors I believe assuming that they're only in town for a few hours.
Oh and cops there I've heard from locals are a bit on the un-lawful side so just keep your nose clean
By the way, which area are you staying?
Next time we're going up to the Blue Mountains...best coffee!
Also it's good to venture out into the "unknown", some of my greatest adventures are made of that. STJ will always be waiting for your "next time"

Thanks for the positive thoughts! We are staying at Couples Swept Away in Negril. The "couples" resorts has a huge following and message board just like STJ does. Its funny b/c I have always been a STJ junkie and never even thought there were other places out there that people could could get addicted to. They even have a slogan, once you go, you know. All of their info and tips (like yours) are helping me to get very excited and less sceptical. Also, I was able to go to STJ this past October with girlfriends so I feel like I have had my fix- at least for awhile. You're right about the Ocho Rios cruise stop thing. I have been there done that too. The only good thing was Dunns river falls. Thanks again for the advice.
