Buying trip insurance for a group trip

Post by alw1977 »

I've called CSA and the rep seemed more confused than I am. We've got three couples, none of us related, all coming from different cities. I don't know how to determine the coverage for each of us. The issue - what if one couple has to cancel due to a family emergency? It's great that they get their $$ back, but then the rest of us are stuck with a villa bill out of our budget.

Does anyone have any experience with how to insure properly in this situation? For ease, here's a loose determination of trip cost per couple (villa and flight only):

1. Couple 1 - $1400 (FF miles are the best!)
2. Couple 2 - $2100
3. Couple 3 - $2100

Thanks for helping me unravel this mystery.

Okay, see this is where I get confused. I've never had to file a trip insurance claim, so maybe that's why I fail to understand this. Say couple #2 had to cancel two weeks before due to a health issue. We've aleady paid our villa in full, so they would just submit a claim for their portion and that would be that, correct? I think I am confused because a while back someone was talking about one party insuring the whole villa cost. I don't know, maybe I'm just making this too hard.

So, all you have to do is choose your amount of insurance (based on your villa cost, flights and other things like rental car deposits or day trip deposits) and it's that simple?

I guess I'm a little confused, also. Wouldn't the couple who needed to cancel still pay their share of the villa with the money they receive from CSA?

We always purchase insurance, but have never needed it, thankfully. I assumed the insurance would take care of all our expenses including villa rental.

Well, I posted my reply before I saw ALW's second post. But I think Waterguy's on to something, too, except you should pick me join you! :D
