Olympus 770/790 owners....
I just received my new Olympus Stylus 790SW today. I know it says waterproof but I am so use to putting these camera in a big underwater box. Can you confirm that they really are waterproof without any type of case??? Just the way they are??? Seems so wierd!

Bug,
I snorkeled and went in the pool with the 770SW and didn't have a problem. I did soak it in fresh water each night as instructed and have some nice photos of the sink to prove it. I haven't done the 5' drop test though and hopefully never will.
Thanks to Steve S for his recommendation.
Good luck with it at SOTB.

You're welcome NJ. The freshwater rinse is a must. Our 770's will go down to 30 feet while I believe the 790 is good to 10 feet. I previously posted about a floating strap that would make a good insurance policy. Floating Strap
Bug- I advise getting familiar with the scene menu and how to access the screen brightness adjust. Like any large screen displays - there is no optical viewfinder and they can be hard to see. Don't worry too much, I often just held the camera in the general direction of the shot and clicked. The 7m pixel resolution allows you to zoom and crop to get the picture you wanted. Have fun.
PS Bug - PM me about your spring trip. I'll also be in St. John from 4/14 - - 4/21 and have a 17 (18 by then) year old daughter also who will be with us this time.

Thanks all for your help. It just seems so un-natural to submerge this camera!! glad to know it really works
Steve ~ I did take your advice and purchased the strap as well. Don't want to loose it! As for the screen brightness, I will take time and learn how to adjust it. My Sony does not have a viewfinder either and last year it was really hard to see what I was taking a picture of. Especially inside the plastic case. I was just pointing a shooting as you did. I was disappointed in my pictures last year but it rained almost every day and we had very little sun. I think that really effected the quality of the underwater photos. Hopefully I will have better luck this year!
I will PM you a little closer to our spring trip to make some plans. We can ditch our daughters together

I just bought the Olympus 770SW, too cheap to buy the 1030 and I wanted the 33 foot depth of the 770 rather than the 10 feet of the 790. I also bought a floating strap and a 2GB card. Ready to rock-n-roll...
I thought my daughter's underwater smile was admirable...tested it out in the subdivision pool...
you will see more from this camera later this month..

Hi Bug,
I have the 790 as well, with the floating strap (definitely the floating strap for peace of mind!) and I was very hesitant, even though my BIL has one too and assured me it was fine to put it in the water. My husband was getting tired of me worrying about it, so our first time at Maho, he grabbed it from me, as I was still too nervous, and threw it about 2 feet from where I was standing into the water! I was a little stunned. But it broke the ice, and I was not nervous at all the rest of the trip!
Love this camera! Can't wait to use it again in February when we are there for 11 days!!!

Hey Bug,
Just returned from St John last week and we used our 770 for the first time. We also felt real cautious about putting it in the water for the first time. Especially in the beggining of our vacation. But all went well. It took pretty good pics. I also suggest that you make sure that you give it a fresh water bath when you finish to rinse off the salt water. Enjoy!!
