Airfare smackdown

Post by Robin in NC »

My wife and I usually take a trip somewhere New Year's week, typically to a Southeastern beach. This year, before we decided to forego the trip so we could go back to STJ next May instead, I'd been looking at going to Cancun, the Dominican, St. Martin, as well as St. John. I'd tagged a number of flights on Yapta to keep up with the prices. I got my latest update, and without going into details, here's what's happened to the fares since I started looking in late April:

Up $489
Up $504
Up $236
Up $466
Up $604
Up $298
Up $36
Up $55

Don't know what fares are going to be to STT for May, but I'll probably take the first thing even remotely reasonable. Can't see prices going anywhere but up.

Robin - I pounced on tickets through Continental a couple of days ago. We aren't even going until the end of April, but I got tickets RT from LAX to STT for $478 each! That's lower than any other airline I've checked over the past month, and I doubt seriously that fares are going anywhere but UP (as shown by your history) so I grabbed those suckas! Amazing!

Robin...I also jumped and put together our flights for April...we luckily has a few travel vouchers from an earlier series of unfortunate flights that helped. We paid $522 each total (before travel voucher) from Boston and I looked yesterday and the cheapest combination for the dates we booked to be found was $975 per person. Up over $450 a person.

I am one of the lucky ones, too!

I booked our airfare for next April on June 1 and June 3 (purchased each leg separately).

Anyway, our total per person from Boston to St. Thomas was $428.80 (including all taxes & fees). I went out the other day (and also just now) and the exact same itinerary is now $837.80 per person. That is $409 more per person. Incredible. And to think virtually just a week has gone by.

WOW - so advice to all out there. Be looking on that first date that your date goes on up for purchase. I was able to get base fares of $179 and $189 for our flights. The base fares are now well over $300.
