What is the differences between Bread on the Water ($70pp) and Spree ($35pp). I've never had experience with either and would appreciate any comments.

After looking at the less expensive prices for Spree, I don't see why we can't do both! (Bread on the Water is off island the week we're there)

Liamsaunt, the link to the Banzhat studio was much appreciated. That's whay I'm talking about--very unique pieces. Bear in mind that I'm not the only shopper--15 year old daughter has excellent taste--just not enough babysitting money to cover it. Lucky for her, Daddy is a pushover for "artistic" jewelry. He talked her out of a "tacky" high school class ring because he could buy her a more a "tasteful" piece of jewelry. I think she's calling in on that promise now! :)

I cant speak for Bread on the Water....have only done Captain Bob....

The four of us sailed with Captain Bob on the Spree 2 (340-771-3734). Left Cruz Bay at 9:45am. Boarded his Pearson 39. $70 per person for full day-bring your own lunch. We made 2 snorkle stops near Little St. James. Lots of fish. Great day. Good coral. Huge barracuda hanging out near the boat. Blue tang, sergent majors, large rainbow parrot fish, trunk fish. He provides beer, water and pop.

Sailing....not much motering; just the way we like it...

I'm thinking bread on the water does the catered lunch and escorts you in a dingy while snorkling...also there may be a difference in where you go.

Keep in mind at these prices, this is not a trip to the BVI's...Captain Bob may do this, but a higher rate I'm sure.

An architect here as well so I can feel his pain in trying to relax by not doing anything at all on a beach. My advice is to head to STT a time or two. Lots of old buildings as well as shopping. There also is a lot more going on in downtown C.A. so that may satisfy his need to do "something."

On a side note I have to admit that our last trip to the VI's was the first time was I truely able to relax by doing nothing at all on a beach. I think that comes from us staying in a home-like atmosphere of a villa rather than a hotel room as in past trips. We were always planners in terms of dinner and meals. Where to eat, when to get off the beach and get ready, and then get to the restaurant. Now we just head up to the villa whenever and do some cooking whenever we get hungry and want to leave the beach. Much more casual and it makes a big difference when you have the "comforts" of home rather than just a basic hotel room.

Bling vs waves

Post by Bill in Va »

Yo...My three cents worth....Get on the water. See this beautiful island as it glides past your view...then...go to see Alice or Tom her husband at Coral Bay Jewelers which is straight off the ferry dock in Cruz Bay. Tell them Bill and Sandie from Va sent you and yes you will get a discount. They make a braclet for each beach as well as hook ones. THEY make them not have them made. That is all...two more days till we hit the beach...God bless...Bill

I bought a Petroglyph ring at Coral Bay Jewelers. Tom made it for me in one day! They are super nice people and Tom's a great craftsman!

I always spend one afternoon browsing Mongoose Junction. I have purchased one item each year from The Best Of Both Worlds near the Sun Dog Cafe. Hammered silver Gecko earrings, Silver Hook bracelet with gold and hammered silver petroglyph earrings. All handcrafted and they're all I wear!!

Here's a link to all the shops at Mongoose!

I agree with the architect poster - many of them find the historical buildings in St Thomas inspiring. I'd suggest sending him on the Blackbeard's Castle walking tour. BEAUTIFUL restored colonial residences. Down the street is the Seven Arches Museum, another restored residence. If you're there on a week day, you can probably pop in the Historical Preservation Office and chat up with somebody there. It makes their day when somebody takes an interest in what they do. Also, the Historical Trust now has a tiny museum in Royal Dane Mall with lovely antiques.

He'd probably appreciate the Grand Hotel. There are lovely arches throughout the inside of the building.

On St John, he might be interested in the Maho properties, because they have set the standard for sustainable living.

By the time he's finished with all that, he'll be ready for a day sail!
