STJ has spoiled me forever!

So, Flip Flop and I just returned from a MUCH NEEDED girlz long week-end at Rehoboth Beach, DE.

Before I began visiting the VI in 1995, this beach suited me just fine. I played in the water, lounged on the sand and ate Thrasher's boardwalk fries.

Now, I only go so I can sit on the sand and be at a beach. I don't go in the water and I lament about the "ass to ass defend your beach turf at all costs" mentality that I am faced with when I go.

All FF and I could do was talk about STJ and our countdown clocks.

So, I am forever spoiled by STJ. The not so crowded beaches, the soft white sand, calm & clear waters and generally good beach goer vibe.

The one thing that the Delaware beaches do have working in their favor over STJ? The really HOT young lifeguards on duty with their cute red bathing suits on!!!! Oh to be 18 again!! But we could export them to STJ!!

It'll never be the same for me again...

Hey Gromit, the lifeguards in Rehobeth are wired for DC. At least if you took one home you could play dress up!

I think the East Coast ocean resorts end up looking rather dirty even when they are not packed with great unwashed masses.

At least in Rehobeth there is always Dogfish Head Brewery!

Yes, STJ can certainly raise the bar (sic) for any beach. We have a shack in RB that's rented for the summer...bummer. But I don't miss the crowds. When in RB, pick and choose wisely. A short drive down RT 1, past Dewey, is Tower Rd beach - with a bathhouse and showers. Farther down the road is Key Box - laid back surfing beach and very minimal crowds. For beach food: Gus & Gus on the boardwalk for gyros, or Go Gish! for the best chip shop this side of Greenwich England. Favorite local restaurants are Fins and Pig & Fish.

We're downie shoa nearly every weekend in the off-season. We really should to plan for a Forum Weekend in September or October. The shack is a 4-story condo, 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, sleeps a lot.

Your shack sounds awesome and though we didn't hit what sounds like some great beaches we did hit ALL Three food choices you listed. GO fish was awesome. Fins had great drinks and appetizers and some of the fattest soft shells I've seen in a while and I grew up on the Bay. Pig + Fish was great too!

I know how you feel. I'm only a 1 1/2 hour drive from the beach, and I grew up going to Rehoboth and Dewey Beach. I went back to Dewey, after spending a week on St. John, and was so bummed. I kept looking for the beautiful water, white sand and palm trees, but never found it!

If you want a nice view of the bay and the ocean in Dewey, go to the top of Two Seas Restaurant just before sunset. It's across the street from the Rusty Rudder, on the ocean side. First grab a drink at the bar downstairs and then go up. The view will never be the same as St. John, but it's still enjoyable. Dinner there is really good too.

9 days til I go back to St. John with hubby and the kids!! Can't wait!!!

Gromit - I completely feel you on that one. We used to go to Destin in the Florida panhandle every year and since our first trip to STJ, we have had no desire to go back to crowded beaches full of highrises with commercial stuff everywhere.

We went to Navarre Beach once since then but it just wasn't the same either; although, it was not crowded or full of high rises, there was nothing to see in the water.

So, definitely spoiled here.

Its not STJ, but its not all a loss. That's all I am sayin'! LOL....

I think you people are just all high maintenance!

(Of course this is when my hubby would chime in and say "hello pot, this is the kettle!")

If it has sand and I don't get mugged I am good. STJ is the icing on the cake, but if this girl doesn't get her toes in the sand somewhere there is hell to pay.

Sometimes a 3 hour drive (YES, 3 hours back from the beach Sunday evening - gas prices seem to be crimping lots of travelers styles I think) and cute life guards are all I need to make it through another week in 100+ degree DC!

I'm spoiled too! I'm not far from Cape Cod, but the houses to rent cost more than a villa on St. John, and the beaches are CROWDED! Last time I went I stopped counting at 300 people. Seriously, look at all the people in this picture!

OK, I must agree there is nowhere like STJ. But those of you near other beaches, NO WHINING:)!!! I live in KS. Lets see, we have the Muddy MO river, The Muddy, KS river, and a few muddy lake beaches. It's a 20 hr drive to the nearest ocean beach. It's all a matter of perspective. On the other hand, KS is home, so you gotta love it.

St. John has spoiled me too! I just got back from our beach on Long Island Sound. It's a beautiful beach here in Madison. Only town residents are allowed to use any of our three beaches. They are well kept and not too crowded. Today the visibility was very poor due to the high temps. I enjoyed the respite from the inland heat but did not even attempt to go in the water. It just doesn't have the appeal of the water in STJ. However, that being said I realize how fortunate we are to live close to the water.
