St. John Carnival and Jouvert on July 4th?

Post by CarrieAnn STT 65-83 »

Growing up on STT, I participated in the early am festivities of Jouvert, and went 'tramping' at 4 am during 'Carnival' in late April (for STT) and on July 4th for St. John.

While St. John's Carnival was always a much smaller version, what is the participation of this forum to experience this local Jouvert tradition?

Staying on STT, I will be relaying on a friend's boat to bring us to Cruz Bay, unless the ferry service continues their tradition of the early am service to allow St. Tomians to travel to 'Love City' for the beginning of Carnival.

We always went 'trampin, had breakfast at the Carnival village (or just had a johnny cake on the dock with another MT. Gay), then watched the Carnival parade, went to Hawks Nest to sleep, Cinnamon for a shower, back to the Carnival village for more Mt. Gay, and then the last ferry back to the Rock (STT).

These were the days of my youth (70'-80'), and while I am not planning a day like that (esp. with my teenage girls) it would be cool to show them the Jouvert and Carnival parade with a small visit to the village.
Always on St.Thomas time!

Yes, it's still happening at 4 am in Cruz Bay.

And he's still strutting his stuff down main street.

Sorry won't see you there this year. We're off to Ireland for a couple of weeks next week. Taking jackets instead of bathing suits.

I have lots of pix of carnival is you're interested, check the link.
