Where to go in St. Thomas?

Post by Irina654 »

Hello everyone,
I'm writing from my honeymoon in St. John, which has been wonderful so far. We would like to take a trip over to St. Thomas tomorrow for some shopping and to just walk around. In terms of shopping, we are interested in looking at jewelry (hubby has promised me some diamond earrings as a belated birthday present) and alcohol to take back to the states.

Where can we go in St. Thomas for this and which ferry should we take? Any "musts" in St. Thomas?

Thank you!

Take the downtown ferry and walk across the street. There are so many places to check out, all sorts of stores from jewelry to booze to clothing, etc.
You name it, they have it.

Plus some places to eat.

When you are ready, you can walk across the street and get on ferry (just check the departure times before you leave STJ)

Have a great time and Congratulations!

Congratulations on your wedding!

For alcohol to bring home, check out AH Riise in downtown Charlotte Amelie. I think they have the largest selection. Just remember that they can't send it to the airport for you any more, so you'll have to haul it back to St. John and then again back to the airport when you are leaving.

Since you are staying on St. John, I also wanted to mention that there are two really cool jewelery galleries in Mongoose Junction--Michael Banzhaf and RI Patton. If you like unique stuff you might want to look in and see what is there. But, if you are looking for traditional diamond studs, I think you'll get the best deal on St. Thomas. Remember, you can bargain. Good luck!
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Hi Irina and Congrats on your marriage!

I enjoy walking around the alleyways of the historic downtown of CA for shopping. Also Yacht Haven Grande is real nice and only a couple of years old. Wikked is a good place for a bite to eat and nice cold drinks with a view of the yachts. Some upscale shopping as well as regular type and right next to Havensight where the cruise ships dock.

If you come and go through Red Hook maybe stop up at Mountain Top for a gorgeous view and yummy banana daiquiris.
You could do well for jewelery shopping. Hubs has bargained some down quite a bit (this may work a bit better in the historic section), so there is definately room with most.

I personally like AH Riise for perfume and liquor.

Good luck and enjoy yourselves!

For jewelry Flip Flop and I highly recommend Magnum jewelers on the main drag. They are classy and have great quality jewelry not the same old stuff. Ballerina II is also decent.

Gladys Cafe in Royal Dane Mall is also a nice spot for lunch-- decent West Indian food as well as more traditional items. I love wandering through the alleyways of this mall (historic, outdoor setting, renovation of the old storage areas for ships). Lots of little hidden fountains and nooks and interestng shops.

Apologies for contradicting a previous reviewer here, but I would avoid Mountaintop like the plague.

A friend of mine used to work at the bar up there making their "world famous banana daiquiries" (they claim to have invented them here) and it is a MAJOR tourist trap. The cruise ship folks are ferried up there en masse with a discount coupon for said daiquiries and IMHO it's not worth your time or money. But that's just MHO.

You'd be better off, enjoying downtown, visiting the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere with it's sand floors or wandering around the historic fort.

I second AH Riise-- not always the cheapest but they have a great selection and a pleasant atmosphere.

Finish up at the Greenhouse for munchies and drinks (usually buy one get one) during happy hour while waiting for the ferry back.

Just my 2 cents!

Take the Charlotte Amalie ferry and walk across the street and hold-on-to-your-hats-shopping awaits!

Important! Go when there are only a couple ships in port (literally 2, maybe 3). It gets CROWDED when there are more ships than that.

I highly reccmd Imperial Jewelers! They are extra nice, will barter (tell them you are on STJ, not on the ship), they will give you drinks, they will literally drape you in diamonds to get you to buy something! My engagement ring is from Imperial. Really nice bunch!

I second the Greenhouse for lunch/late lunch. Great Happy Hour specials too!

LysaC -- good advice on shecking the cruise ship sched. I guess I take that as a given -- and you're totally right, if you tell them you're on STJ they know you're there for a while and aren't having to get back on the ship that afternoon. We've always gotten killer deals that way!

Hmm. I don't know if we're going to do a St. Thomas day or not. When we go in June the Thursday, June 26th, is a no cruise ship day. I figured we'd hit Trunk that day but maybe we'll check out St. Thomas. We'll figure it out that week.

I'm afraid to take the wife I may have to spend alot of money if she finds some jewelry she likes!

On a "no cruise ship day" hit Trunk Bay.

Many of the shops will NOT open on "no cruise ship day" and Trunk will be heavenly 8) !!!

And, FYI, if you do go, she'll find A LOT of jewelry that she likes. There are literally dozens of jewelry stoes in CA  .

Hi Gavinman,

Just remember that if there are no cruise ships at CA then most of the shops are closed. Just thought I'd give you a heads up before you end up heading over for a morning of shopping and find everything is closed :?
Or, maybe you prefer it that way on account of the wife's spending!
Enjoy,
Kathy
