Lilly's Follow-up Question

I remember stopping in to buy snacks and a few things in Lilly's and remember the prices being pretty decent. Maybe more than Pine Peace but less than Starfish. I know its not a REAL grocery store, but do they have all the staples I will need to stock up for the week?

Our needs are simple with the kids:

Peanut butter
Bread
Apples
Bananas
Chips

Nothing too crazy. Do they have frozen stuff?

I know this sounds stupid but I am planning on avoiding Cruz Bay as much as possible. I am becoming a STJ snob. I apologize!

They have all those things. I thought the prices at Lilly's were comparable to Starfish. Certain things were definitely more money--bottled water is the big one I remember.

Yes, they have frozen stuff too. I actually spent a bit of time perusing their selections while John shopped for wine, so if there is something in particular you are wondering about just let me know.

Flip Flop: After an initial stop at Starfish our first day, we got everything else at Lilly's (or at the Love Shack if we just needed snacks or booze.) The only thing I remember missing was some pesto sauce for pasta, and the deli cheese was really scary. Like blue and green scary, even if it wasn't bleu cheese. So we skipped the deli cheese and meat unless we could see them open a fresh package. We did find Laughing Cow cheese which was great on tortillas for roll up sandwiches. We also got some fresh salmon there for a good price.

Hey Flip Flop (and everyone else

)

Just a reminder to everyone that if you are going to buy the 1 gallon bottles of water (4 to a case) that they sell at the grocery stores for $$$$$ - don't buy them there go directly to St John Ice in the Lumberyard (the grocery stores buy all of their water that they sell from them) and they only charge $6.00 for 4 gallons (at least they used to it maybe up to $2.00 now as we no longer use them as we have a filter system

) and refills are .50c per gallon

If I am your villa "greeter" Flip Flop, and if you want, I can pick you up some water and have it in my car for you - we would have to figure it out the week you arrive as I won't know if I am on the schedule that week or not.

We have very little to do with Cruz Bay when we're on STJ. We've done most of our grocery shopping at Love City Mini Mart and have always managed to find what we need.

Great advice Pia. Mixology also has it for $6.00 for 4 gallons. We ordered it along with our other beverages.

I will report that according to my receipts a case consisting of four gallons of St. John Island Pure Water is $6 at Starfish also, but I forgot about the 50 cent refills at the lumberyard!

BTW, one large bottle of fiji water at Starfish was $3.29. A six-pack of the smaller fiji bottles was $8.59.

Plus, there's no recycling.

The STJ Island Pure water tastes fine, I prefer to buy that kind, considering we go through more than 1 gallon every day.

Thanks for the info Liamsaunt - I had read somewhere else that a case of water (4 gallons) were approx $10.00 at Starfish so it's good to know they are the same

When Lilly's first opened they were a terrific addition to Coral Bay. I was a little underwhelmed when we were there in fall of 2006.
A not so funny story from their first couple of days. Some guys built shelving for all of their brand new stock of wine and spirits. The shelves collapsed in the middle of the night. Literally over a hundred bottles of booze was broken on the floor! What a sucky way to start for their new business.

Something I notice about the RO and cistern water - I start to feel mineral deprived after a while on island. The water has almost no minerals. A multi-vitamin with minerals seems to help. Our buddy who worked at Maho Campground was given salt pills every day.
