We need a jeep for a day

Post by Lysabu »

We're coming in on a cruise ship for our wedding anniversary and want to rent a jeep just for the day at St. John. Does anyone know which companies do daily rentals?

This rental will be in February.

Thanks!

Feb is almost the height of high season, and to my knowledge rentals for a day are not done with a reservation and the only option you have is to walk up to the car rental agency's when you arrive and see if they have something available.

Good luck

Lysabu,
Even if you are able to get a jeep for the day, trekking around via taxis would probably be easier - you don't have to WAIT to get it and then WAIT to return it - You will have precious limited time on STJ as it is - with getting a cab to the ferry in STT, coming over by ferry - then returning in time to catch your ship.

Grabbing a taxi to take you to a destination - then coming back to get you at a designated time- and taking you to another destination is not a problem on STJ!

While driving around STJ is GLORIOUS, so are any of the destinations you will choose to go to.... plus, while the taxi driver is doing the driving, hopefully, he'll be personable and you will be able to gleen some island info from him - something you can't get on your own- he may even make some great recommendations of where to go - if you are not sure!

In my experience on cruises, where you are able to get off of the ship and get a rental quickly - right there in port, it makes more sense - but with time limitations regarding to just getting to St. John, you don't want to have to take up more time in GETTING THE TRANSPORTATION itself.

ENJOY!
Peace,

Lisa

You bring up an excellent point, lpowmacback. This is actually our 5th trip to St. John but in the past, we've had time to wait around for our rental. Since we'll be there only for a day, our time will be way too precious.

So we've decided to go with your cab suggestion!

Anyone have ideas on an "agenda?"

We're taking the 9 a.m ferry from Charlotte Amalie and then going straight to Hawsknest beach. (that's where we got married 7 years ago :) Then we haven't decided what to do next!

Glad I could help :-)

Your choice of Hawksnest is GLORIOUS!!! I LOVE THAT BEACH!

As for what you do next - If I were you - I'd relax on that magnificent beach as long as possible and then go back to Cruz Bay and look at the lovely shops - maybe grab a snack or drink before getting the ferry back to STT to get back on your ship.

You really can't go wrong with whatever you do on St. John - Just make sure you don't try and do too much and stress yourself out by rushing around- that would defeat the whole experience of being on St. John.

ENJOY!
Peace,

Lisa

We wanted to go around the island. We've had our kids with us during our last 3 trips there and told ourselves when we go to st. john kidless, we must go past cinnamon bay!

I really could lounge around Hawksnest all day but we want to take advantage of this kidless trip!

If you're into snorkeling, it's possible to snorkel from Hawksnest over to Gibney beach, which is gorgeous--one of our faves. We did that in August with kids from 8-11, so it's definitely possible. You might also be able to get a cab driver to take you to either Maho or Francis Bay, both of which are lovely, and beyond Cinnamon!

Yes - when you find a taxi driver in Cruz Bay, ask him if he can drop you off at Hawksnest for a set amount of time, then come back and pick you up to take you WHEREVER YOU WANT to go! :-)

That should not be a problem - just make sure your driver knows what time you need to catch the ferry back to St. Thomas ;-)

ENJOY!
