What do you think of my rental car idea?

I posted a question previously about the 10 am rental car return time and got some great answers. I have an idea, though, and wanted to see what you all thought. We land STT 3:10 (that is, if our flight is one that AA doen't cancel). Probably going to book Rachel to Red Hook as many of you do. We're staying at Caneel Trailside and the manager is meeting us at the ferry dock. Supposedly they provide enough to "get you throught the first night". My idea is to ride with the villa manager to the cottage and then hike the trail down to Cruz Bay and pick up our jeep the next day-then I could move my car ressie back a day and have a return day of Sunday rather than Saturday and actually return the jeep early (Saturday afternoon). Whaddya think?

Are you bringing any real food with you? We had a welcome basket at CTC last year, but I'm pretty sure we couldn't have made an evening meal out of it. I remember snack-type stuff, i.e. cookies, crackers, popcorn, chips, rum and fruit punch. After a long travel day, we were ready for some real food. You could probably pick up something in Cruz Bay, though.

I'm not sure about the hiking question. We hiked up behind the villa, not down. It seems like it would be a bit far, but I'm not a hiker, so not sure about that.

We are freakishly enthusistic hikers! Flip-Flop, are you teasing me, or do you really think it's a good idea?

I am not kidding I absolutely do! I had one of those, why didn't I ever think of that moments.

Of course, it would be my husband hiking to get the car But it is a great idea to extend that last day.

Its a real hike, but doable. Hiking down is more fun than hiking up!

I wouldn't hike the trail - I would walk down to Centerline Road (steep but shorter) and then either.......
a) catch the bus to town for $1.00 - should pass there about 20 to the hour (ish)
b) hitch hike in (perfectly safe) - just point in the direction you want to go, don't use your thumb
c) walk to town

We are booked at the same villa for a week this August, arriving late and expecting to be exhausted. We too plan to walk down to Courtesy for our rental car the next morning. So we asked if we could stop and get groceries on the drive from the ferry to the villa on the night we arrive. Joe, the owner, said sure, but, if we preferred, that his manager could do the shopping for us and have it in the villa’s refrigerator before we even arrived on the island. I would just ask… they seem very accommodating.

By the way, does anyone have recommendations about local seafood? I cannot find any former posts about the local seafood. Is there any?

TideDrifter - the Fish Trap has a fish market and you can also check town for charters that have just come in and have an ice chest in their truck.

We had awesome Tuna Sashimi one year after we bought a Tuna from one of the charters that parked by Coral Bay Jewelers.
