Arrival time/carry-ons
Our plane is scheduled to land at STT @ 3:10 p.m. Can we make the 4 pm Charlotte Amalie ferry to Cruz Bay? Do we need to carry-on only in order to make the 4 pm ferry or can we check bags? For those of you who carry on only, do you buy your sun-tan lotion on STJ/is there usually some leftover at your villa?
And the dreaded return...what time do we need to be back at STT for a 4:20 pm flight? Lastly, how do you pass the time if your STJ rental car is due at 10 a.m.?

Turtlegirl- Villas will have left over sunscreen on occasion but I wouldn't count on it. It isn't something villa owners normally supply, so if there are any it is leftovers from previous renters and therefore unpredictable. If you plan to buy it on island expect to pay about twice what you'd pay at home. Some people ship down a box of stuff so they can do carry-on only. We just check luggage so it isn't a problem.
As for making the 4 pm ferry, it all depends on what happens...if the plane gets in on time, how efficient the taxi service is, etc...I'd say that you should count on not making the 4 pm ferry, and then if you do you it will be icing on the cake

I can only answer part of your questions. I think if you do carry-on, you could make the downtown ferry if everything like your plane and taxis are on time. I wouldn't depend on getting checked luggage in time enough to make that ferry, though.
I left lots of sunscreen and bug spray at our villa, whether the cleaning people took it or left it for the next guests, I can't say, but I would think chances are good that you'll find something at the villa.
When we checked out of our villa and turned in our car, we walked around Cruz Bay for a little while and had a drink at the Beach Bar. Not a practical idea with too much luggage unless you can find someone to keep an eye on it for you. With carry-on it wasn't bad, though.

I think that could possibly be a "hit or miss" situation for making the CA 4:00...so much depends on your flight arrival being on time, getting your transportation quickly, traffic, etc. Just can't always be completely sure.
Suntan lotion? We didn't take any; there was plenty at our villa.
Enjoy your planning & anticipation!!

Last trip, all of our luggage came right out, except one bag that was overlooked. We could see it from the baggage area, but none of the baggage handlers noticed it. I almost crawled through the conveyer opening I got so desperate. We stood there for about 30 minutes until it arrived. So, hit and miss is probably the best answer.
We had no sunscreen at our villa. Plenty of everything else, but we brought our own. I did buy one bottle while we were there, and it was much more expensive.

For the return, I would take the 1:00 to RH or the 1:15 to CA if it is running. Check beforehand. I think the little place right by the Banana Deck (Bringin the Fun) or something like that will hold your luggage. Might be worth a try since you have a few hours. Otherwise you could go to STT early on the CA ferry. I have read that the taxi drivers will watch your luggage and you could have lunch there.

Yes you should be able to make the CA but if you don't just go with the flow. The 1 red hook or 1:15 CA would only give you an 1 hour at the airport not enough time if the lines are long might work if you precheck in and have boarding passes but even then it would be cutting it close. Porters due help most of the time but if customs doesn't have a lane for them open you have to wait like the rest.

We have used a private taxi (Rachel) the last two times on the way in. We have also done a water taxi in the last two times, but only because we had people to share it with. I think it is way too expensive for just the two of us and not a necessity. Trust us, it is a lot easier than it sounds. You just have to go with the flow. You will get there

We've always been happy with a regular taxi and the ferry from CA. That said, if you arrive at a weird hour, it may be better to get a private taxi. I figure that, since we tend to arrive mid-day, if we don't make one ferry, we'll make the next. I go on island time the minute we are wheels down... no hassles, no worries mon!
