I've been making a list of places to see/go on my trip in April, and you'd better believe this is now near the top! Thanks.

Yes! We spent the early part of a lovely evening at the brew pub, chatting with Cheech and Kevin, the owners and brewmasters! We had already sampled the VI Pale Ale (my boys headed straight for the local brew at Starfish) at our villa and I was going crazy trying to identify the fruit essence in the ale. Right off Cheech informed me it was mango and described their whole trial and error process of getting the flavor right. Apparently many have asked the same question so it now reflects mango on the label! The brew pub is upstairs from Ocean Grill in Mongoose Junction. They have a nice selection of their own brew and a few others on tap as well as some wine. They really want to get the word out to visitors, so if you like it, let everyone know!

Another new place to try. I know I will never fit in everything I have learned from these trip reports unless I totally miss the point of St John which is relaxing!

Oh, great, just what the world needs - mango flavored beer.

Sorry it doesn't appeal to you...it was great. Not mango flavored, just a hint...you could smell it as you popped the cap. To each their own. I loved it.

I plan to put a pretty big dent in their inventory...someone better warn them to up the production before Rob from Texas arrives in May!

and...I can't wait to try the mango tinted ale, sounds like a nice change in pace for me

This is great news. We are major beer geeks/homebrewers. The gang we go to STJ with most Novembers is all homebrewers and good beer is rather lacking on the island, excepting foreign extra stout. This venue will fill a real void for us.

Our group of 10 in October 2005 was mixed on the mango beer. About 50% positive. Personally, I found it cloying after the first beer. But, I could drink more than one a day, just not in a row.

A positive review from this group is tough - 9 of 10 are certified beer judges (bjcp.org). One couple in our group were the AHA best of show homebrewers of the year in 2005 at the National Homebrew Competition with over 4,500 entries. Christine and I got a bronze for our Keller Pils that year. Christine took a silver medal at the National Homebrew Competition in 2006 with an all girl team (I got skunked). In 2004, my "West Indian Viagra" foreign extra stout got a gold medal (one of 26) at the National Homebrew Competition. We make this every year; makes you strong like bull! Definately St. John inspired. <BURP>

Re fruit in beer, this fall my wife made what I thought was a brave choice and ordered a "Pumpkin" beer (is pumpkin a fruit?)at a brew pub and it was way good. Go figure.

Hey, is Heavyweight still brewing up your way? They had some pretty insane products. I enjoy Perkuno's Hammer.

I believe it still is but I have not ever had their stuff. I will have to look out for it.

We favor some Belgian beers and we often head in to Philly to visit a little place that has nothing but Belgians, some on tap as well. And now there's a place in Manhattan doing the same.
