Three Car Barge Companies?

Post by snorkeloony »

Hello All,

Only ten days until St. John -- woohoo!!!

We've rented a jeep through Dependable on St. Thomas, and will be taking the barge over. Our flight arrives after 3PM on a Monday, so I hope we're not cutting it too close.

I just looked at the ferry schedules (from the drop-down menu above, under "trip planning") and noticed that there are three different car barge companies listed: Boyson, Republic, and Roanoke.

Is there any difference between them? Or do you pretty much just get on the first one that's available?

Thanks

Yes, there are three. Boyson runs on the half hour most times. Their boats are gray. RT is $50 with them. The other two are black and white and charge $42 RT.They run on the hour. The black and white ones accept each other's tickets. Boyson, only their own. Some folks suggest if you want to take the first available, is to just buy a one way ticket. It may cost a few dollars more, but you leave on the first available one!

I'd catch the first ferry you can since you might be cutting it close on time. There's no use trying to save a couple bucks for another ferry if it means you could be stuck on STT :)

Thank you so much -- I think getting those one-way tickets may be worth the extra $$, given my time window.

I just thought of another question: about how long is the drive from the airport to Red Hook? From what I've read about the traffic, it could be crazy, depending on any number of random factors.
