Also in the Pacific NW, a loop around Seattle (Pike Place Market), Vancouver (water taxi to Granville Island = artists, shops, restaurants, robust public market), San Juan Islands (orcas and cool B&Bs) and Victoria BC (English architecture and afternoon tea) is tough to beat.
Great ferry service, awesome food - salmon, halibut, Dungeness crab, local beers/wine/coffee bars etc.
When we come to place where the sea and the sky collide

Just an FYI about vacationing on the New England coast in the summer:

It's crowded and there's traffic!

The Cape, Ogunquit, etc can get really congested on the weekends. It can get crowded at certain lakes as well (Winnipesake comes to mind).

I'm not saying don't come cuz New England coast beaches are awesome in the summer and lobster feasts and fried clams just can't be beat.

And if you do a little research you can find an out-of-the-way place with all the charm and less craziness.

Just, like a scout, be prepared!

California is fabulous in August! Come visit me and I'll take you to the Laguna Art Festival! The Pageant of the Masters it an amazing thing to see! There's more to see in Calif. than Disneyland, Sea World and Universal Studios! ech!

If you don't come here, I'd second Seattle... a beautiful city, and I absolutely love the Pike Place Market!

Right now it looks like DC is the area we will end up in. I have never been there and it is getting big reviews! I work with 2 girls from that area who are pushing it big time!

Kenneth is excited about the spy museum among many of the others.

What suggestions do any of you have for this area. We will be there mid august.

Hello, I live in the DC area, if you have any questions, fire away. The spy museum is a lot fun, also, just opened is the Newseum, A must see. Also, Georgetown for shopping, go down to the water front in Georgetown, for drinks and dinner along the Potomac overlooking the Kennedy Center. There is also dinner cruises on the Potomac that take you by the sights at night. Go to the Monuments at night. Less people and it is all lit up. History Museum is closed for renovations, but the Space Museum is a good alternative and the American Indian Museum. I could go on and on. So PM if you have any questions.

I live about 15 miles outside of DC and you really will enjoy it. Like DCPhoto said there is a lot to see!

In addition to the monuments at night, which she is RIGHT ON about - very beautiful at night - take a walk around Embassy Row. It is a completely unique to DC experience.

Also, this is a great resource for finding out what is going on in DC at any given time.

Cat,

I sent you a PM, let me know if you get it. I sent it but it is not showing as being sent. I'll think of more, I'm going to be in DC next week and keep a list going in my head for you.
