vacation help

Hey everyone! We are recouperating from Jazz Fest and have started planning the next trip. I figured what better place to ask for suggestions than here!

We are trying to decide where to go for vacation the week of August 15th through the 24th. It will be just Kenneth and I but we are really having trouble decicing! We don't want to break the bank but want a nice getaway together.

We were looking at Disney World and then thought we should try something different. Another spot we are looking at is San Antonio and staying on the Riverwalk.

We are travelling from New Orleans and just can't decide! Is there a festival or something we really shouldn't miss where any of you live or do you have a great spot you like to go at this time of year we might like?

I can't wait to hear your suggestions!

That time of year I would head North...my favorite Northern places include-- Gloucester/Rockport Mass, Boston Mass, Portland ME, Freeport ME...

I also love touring the Frank LLoyd Wright houses in ILL and WI...before Fall or Winter comes...

Hey Cat,

I agree w/Sherban - head north and try to beat the heat. A few years ago, toward the end of July, it was 102 degrees here in the St. Louis area and my hubby had business in Portland Oregon - it was 71 degrees there. I flew out and joined him for a long weekend. The Columbia Gorge area is beautiful, lots of hiking and gorgeous waterfalls.

One evening we drove up Mt. Hood and had dinner at the Timberline Lodge. (parts of the movie The Shining was filmed there)

We also took some time and drove out to the coast to Cannon Beach and some other points of interest.

It is a beautiful part of our country.

I am not sure about costs, since hubby was on business, hotel, car rental and some meals were on his expense account.

Hi guys! I know a great place in Southeastern Virginia. Weather and boating are great that time of year.

It's not as CROWDED as Disneyland, or as HOT as San Antonio! It's JUST RIGHT, so come on down.....or up.

2nd Oregon in August. Portland is a wonderful city, the coast is beautiful, and if you make it all the way down to Crater Lake, that is one of the top 3 places of natural beauty I've ever seen.

These are some great suggestions! Maine, Mass, Oregon, Wisconsin, Virgina Coast......! This was a great idea! I can't wait to get home from work to start looking into all of these spots!

Cooler weather would definitly be nice around then!

We went to Door Co and Mackinac Island, MI in 2006. I have some pictures if you are interested. It was a really nice vacation even if was partially in the same state that we live in and not too far. It seemed like we wre in a different state.
I'd avoid flying to Chicago if you can swing Milwaukee or Green Bay, but that is just me.

Last summer we had a family reunion in late June/early July in San Diego.

We took the opportunity, since we were way out on the other coast, to drive from there to Seattle after the reunion ended.

I would certainly second the Oregon recommendation, and add that northern California and Washington state also were very good places to beat the heat.

And Crater Lake exceeded all of our expectations!

It was so different than summer in Florida!

We stayed in Huntington Beach, Monterey, Tiburon (just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco), Medford OR, Portland, and Seattle.

All were different, and all were amazing. Personally, I'd love to spend a little more time in the Mendocino County area in northern California - I couldn't get over how cool it was to drive through redwood forests, and see the fog shrouded Pacific from bridges that spanned mountain passes!

Looks like you don't have any shortage of suggestions!

last time I was in Saratoga I was in this nice little wine bar on the main drag there. loved it!
