JET SKIS
JET SKIS
Are there any jet ski rentals on STJ, have not seen any postings about them. Who and how much.
Just thought about it as an option instead of a dinghy, its only two of us.
Do the locals see them as destructive to the reef?

You can take a guided tour through the Westin but you cannot rent them on your own. X is right. They are not allowed into the park at all and the guides make sure that you stay within the boundaries. We stayed away from the beaches. If I remember right we went out by Caravel rock
My daughter requested to do this on her graduation trip in 06 so we did. I hated it. 2 hours of bone jarring, muscle pounding stinging salt water in your eyes was not my idea of a swell time. I would guess they are not well received by locals or visitors that frequent the island.
I much preferred a day out on the dinghy and would recommend this over a jet ski tour anyday!

OK I get it, no one wants or likes jet skis on STJ, thats fine with me, it was the other half that put the ? out, we hadn't heard anybody talk about them so I had to ask. Thanks so much for the replys and I'll never bring up the cursed subject or nasty {jet ski} word again.

I hope what I said didn't come across as bashing. I just go to STJ for the quiet and calm of the beaches.
We don't like them anywhere, we have a boat on a small lake and they drive me crazy there, too.
Most (not all) people that are on them have no idea what they are doing and usually just go too fast and it is not safe.
I am sure that people enjoy them.

No, RED EARS, as much fun as it looks like they could be, I'm sure that they wouldn't be too well received on STJ. Now, don't get mad at me, but I'm gonna be my usual sarcastic self, all in good fun. But, not bashing, mind you.
Jet Ski? On STJ? Gee, Maybe when I buy the Maho Bay property, I'll make a jet ski rental park! Aw, come on folks, can't you just see, and hear, jet skis zooming around Maho, Francis and Peter Bay? Oh, and Salt Pond. There's a job for you, Jorge! You can run the Salt Pond Jet Ski concession stand! What a great harmonizing effect they'd have with the trickle noises on the rocks at Blue Cobblestone!
Me? I fish the Potomac River from a canoe and I seriously think that there should be an open jet ski season up here. Meaning that we can shoot 'em when they're in season.

Jet skies are frowned upon by St John locals and visitors, but I believe the Westin has guided use of them in restricted area out aways. It really isn't worth the money. We have used jet skies, but not in USVI. They are fun for a bit, but quickly become boring. That's why you see so many used ones for sale.

catch any 3 eyed fish?

Actually with a bunch of ridicule from the local 'necks I quit eating fish from the river again,["again" being another story] about 7 years ago when a lot of the catfish I was cleaning started having weird leasions on them. Now, over 70% of the male smallmouth bass on the Potomac have eggs!! Now I think somrthing is amiss.
Anyway, back to STJ. Why am I so surprised that the Westin rents jet skis?

I have no problem with the Westin renting jets skis. Being built on a man-made beach with no coral to speak of is not a big deal. When we stayed on GCB in November we saw a few excursion go out. They take you on a tour of the outer cays. I don't think there is any more ecologial impact than any other outboard motor There weren't that many of them.
I think the National Park is what's going to save STJ in the long run - having that much of the island under management.
Cheers, RickG

I've ridden jetskis many times and there a blast but I sure wouldn't want to see them everywere in St John. St John is a nature lovers dream lets keep it that way. I agree with Rick the Park system is what will save St John lets hope they never sell out for the all mighty dollar. Thank you Mr Rockefeller for our little slice of heaven
